About 800 residents reported for work under the Finance Corporation relief program in Morgan county with 830 applications certified and 60 more approved. Welfare workers say all in need will receive county road and improvement work, while direct relief funds will aid dependents not yet paid. Transients are ineligible for county projects.
The Decatur post office, banks and railroad freight offices were closed today in observance of Washington's birthday.
Decatur area units organize statewide coalition. Coleman Peck and J D Pickens lead county committee. South Decatur leaders J M Bloodworth and Bryan Abbott with pastors call public meeting at Southside Baptist Church at 7 pm Thursday with speakers Rev J E Berkstresser and Mrs Mary F Black.
Miss Lorraine Winton, injured two years ago in a Swan Lake bridge fall, went to St Vincent's hospital Birmingham yesterday for treatment. Her friends hope the care will restore her health.
Mrs Sarah Brothers aged 10 wife of W M Brothers died this morning at her residence Decatur Route 4. Funeral services will be at 11 oclock Thursday morning by Rev B P Collier with interment at Bashams cemetery. Brown directs. Survived by husband three sons R F of Decatur Z A and M H Brothers of Nashville three daughters Mrs W O Rice Mrs Roy Gizzard and Mrs Clarence Lamon all of Decatur Ten grandchildren survive.
Two negroes arrested Tuesday night for petit larceny in connection with stealing coal from freight cars near Decatur union station were fined in police court this morning.
Reports from Mukden indicate the Japanese may seize Peiping and Tientsin as part of a Jehol sweep. Mukden is tense with heavy artillery as fighting rages along the Chinchow Peipiao line and at Kailu with 100000 Chang Hsiao Liang forces to be crushed.
A white man charged with manufacturing whiskey was arrested by Sheriff's forces today and jailed awaiting a hearing. He was picked up at the courthouse this morning during circuit court in session.
The national missions committee of the Huntsville Presbytery will convene at 10 o'clock Monday morning at Westminister Presbyterian Church here. Rev. E. L. Orr of Nashville, synodical executive, will deliver the principal address.
E N Hart president of the Decatur Charity Council extends appreciation to Mr Peebles of Mooresville for a gift of spare ribs and backbones from his farm. The meat will be used in local relief work.
In Talladega Alabama R J Parker 51 and Mrs E D Patterson 48 jailed on first degree murder charges over the February 6 death of Patterson's husband whose body was found February 16 in Choccolocco Creek The case will be examined by the Talladega grand jury February 27 The coroner's inquest heard Parker claim the man fell from a boat while fishing and struck his head on a post.
Central High Bible and other schools heated by a central unit faced extreme cold but a committee led by Prof. W. W. Benson reported repairs. Traps on radiators will be replaced and a cracked Riverside High furnace section will be replaced to prevent leaks and restore 70 degree heating.
In Montgomery on February 22 the senate rules committee voted against a measure to appoint an expert to aid in the utility rates investigation. Senators Powell and McDaniel opposed. Teasley Fletcher Edmundson and McDowell supported. The house appropriations committee opposed the Poole bill funding elementary schools from educational trust funds. Former Governor Bibb Graves defended the 1929 textbook contract during testimony to the joint committee on school book prices.
A slight uptick in Decatur cotton trading saw a local firm purchase 400 bales this week. The deal stands as one of the largest in recent memory, with the cotton reportedly bought from a Moulton planter.
Mr and Mrs E E Timberlake and son Flip of Stevenson will arrive Monday to reside with Cecil and Lawrence Timberlake. The move marks the Jackson family establishing a home in the area with relatives.

Secret service pursue a man after a crude shotgun shell packed to explode if mishandled was found in a package addressed to Franklin D. Roosevelt at the Washington post office. The parcel, postmarked Water Town New York, fell from a mail sack and burst open. Officials say the blast probability was low and the shell likely harmless. Chief W H Morgan led the investigation.
The House adopted Representative Burns Democrat Tennessee's amendment granting power to merge and abolish bureaus and reorganize departments as part of a broader effort to empower the next president. The Senate amendment proposing a 5 percent cut in entangled department expenditures was rejected. The conference report awaits Senate action before heading to the White House, and Speaker Garner's broader cuts proposal appears abandoned for this session.
