Montomery Alabama February 21 A convicted flim flammer once charged with taking 250 dollars to secure a parole for her nephew was not an agent of the state pardon parole board a former member testified to the legislature parole investigating committee Glen Vinson said he had no first hand knowledge of the case If the man Albert Melhman did accept money on that pretense he did it on his own Melhman was indicted in July 1950 by a Montgomery grand jury for taking 250 dollars from Betty M Koch of Bowling Green Ohio to secure release of Marvin Marcus from prison He had been given a temporary release in 1949 with extensions totaling 35 days and was arrested in a Birmingham hotel Vinson said he did not bring the Melhman case to the grand jury or hear of it from Bill Drinkard another board member He thought it was brought to the grand jury by Geoffrey Birt of The Alabama Journal He said he signed paroles for two World War II veterans convicted of rape One case Russell Cobb of Talladega county was paroled after less than two years of a 20 year term He said Cobb was a war era victim and noted you can make any kind of case out of a rape case The other veteran Roy Muse from Cleburne county was paroled in December 1950 Muse and another white man reportedly raped a negro girl Vinson recalled former Rep A C George of Randolph county may have contacted him about Muse or the other man He said Muse had a good record and the time was right for parole He named two other former lawmakers R B Doughty and Charles Pinkston both Montgomery County residents Pinkston possibly contacted him about the Muse case See FLIM-FLAMMER on Page 2

A 39 year old white man, Lynn Hallmark, is in Morgan County jail charged with attempted burglary after an incident on Fifth Avenue West yesterday afternoon. Also jailed are Junior Cory, 23, for grand larceny tied to a February 1950 jersey cow theft from Ellen Merriman. Additional arrests include a temporary arrest for parking on the highway and another for public drunkenness.
