Greenville South Carolina February 21 Twenty seven men were jailed in connection with the lynching of a 24 year old Black man near Greenville Monday Sheriff H H Bearden said twenty three of the men are Greenville taxi drivers who signed statements admitting mob involvement He withheld names and statements and said another man is being interrogated Bearden noted the victim had five stab wounds and a shotgun blast in the head and was found by a roadside Ed Gilstrap jailer at Pickens county jail said about 25 armed unmasked men seized Earle the suspect in the fatal stabbing and robbery of taxi driver T W Brown Bearden said no formal charges had been filed yet in the death investigation
Henry Buren Moody a 15 year veteran state law enforcement officer was appointed chief of the Alabama state highway patrol by J B Mitchell effective March 1 Moody age 46 succeeds Clyde C Sellers who resigned Moody is a Coffee county native who moved to Montgomery as a youth then worked at an optical firm before joining the U S Marine Corps for two years.
A Texas district court jury found the defendant guilty in a forgery case and assessed two years. Judge Cross advised adding the phrase in the state penitentiary, noting a juror admitted no one knew how to spell penitentiary.
Police fixed the death toll at 15 after a night of probing debris from the J J O Connor Corp electroplating plant. Of 158 injured, several were feared aging as authorities investigated the cause of the perchloric acid detonation and the secret process cited by O Connor.
Montgomery report shows J. D. Mitchell recommending a $1 annual fee for drivers licenses, replacing current two year licenses at 50 cents per year. The plan expires licenses one year from issue, outlines new income sources, and calls for 56 additional patrolmen to cover every county.
Army authorities and state and local police hunted four prisoners who fled from Camp Kilmer New Jersey during a work detail. Among the escapees is William H. Brewer age 22 from Is ville Alabama and John B. Miller age 20 of Chattanooga Tennessee. They threatened a guard with a knife, seized his rifle, and locked him in a hospital car while escaping near the rail head. A small amount of ammunition was taken.
Columbian President Emory Burke was sentenced to three years for usurping police powers in directing a Negro hating Jew baiting group. He faces 12 months on each of three counts, to run consecutively, with a motion for a new trial filed. The judge warned that constitutional law governs all, while noting Burke’s illegal activities.
London dispatch reports Prime Minister Attlee warns India must choose between violent civil conflict or peaceful move to independence as leaders and factions in the empire debate the path forward before Britain suspends its rule over the subcontinent.
MIT President Karl Compton says scientists are disgusted by Senate handling of Lilienthal’s atomic energy commission nomination. McKellar questions TVA links as witnesses describe communist activity, naming Gordon Clapp’s possible TVA director nomination and various party ties in Tennessee.

The severe snowstorm grips the East from Maine to North Carolina with heavy drifting and school closures. In New York City the storm threatens a foot of snow by noon, the worst since 1941. Highways in New Jersey were blocked while Pennsylvania reported two highway deaths and New York City saw one storm fatality. Schools closed and snow plows battled 19 inch accumulations in Lee county Virginia as Maryland logged up to 15 inches with Timore rainfall.
President Truman asked Congress to approve 350 million dollars in relief aid for liberated countries abroad. He noted UNRRA operations are ending and urged continued humanitarian action, while U S relief in occupied Germany and Austria is funded by the War Department.
Walter Reuther told the Senate labor committee that American industry must raise wages substantially to preserve purchasing power while Senator Ball accused him of advocating socialism. Reuther urged Congress to pass higher minimum wages health coverage and housing, warning that current bills won’t avert inevitable industrial conflict. He noted auto workers earn less buying power today than in 1940 despite higher cash wages.
The senate public works committee recalled Henry C. Hart a former TVA employee for more testimony on a mysterious letter McKellar says proves communists worked for TVA under Gordon R. Clapp. Hart calls the letter a fabrication and suggests forgery by Robert Barker or others. Clapp nomination remains before the committee.
Auburn Alabama trustees meet in closed session after approving a 13.913 million dollar, two year budget request to the state legislature. Gov. James E. Folsom's administration challenges the extension service policies as critics urge higher funding. The board split on the raise, with a plan to refine the budget before resubmitting.
