London based Hermann Field says he spent five years imprisoned in a cellar in Communist Poland. He claims Warsaw paid him 50 000 dollars for wrongful arrest and denies being a Communist or agent. A machinist at J B Hurst Machine Works he was painting machinery then spilled paint and, while using gasoline in the washroom, got too close to a heater. He was taken to Bank St Hospital. Washroom damage estimated at $100.
Bad weather in Las Vegas delays the first A test of the 1955 series. The planned 7:30 a.m. air drop of the atomic device was postponed after a morning weather conference. Test chiefs chose daylight air drop over a predawn tower shot due to conditions.
President Eisenhower told the Republican National Committee not to paint Democrats as the party’s worst enemy as they plan for the 1956 nominating convention in San Francisco on August 20. He warned that the great struggle is against a dictator world and urged maintaining balance of values in elections.

James Hartsfield chair of the Merchant's Division says no further action will be taken to merge Second Ave Lee and Bank Sts into one Broadway. The plan, adopted by merchants, met strong official and private opposition, so no formal presentation to the City Council is planned now.
