Judge A. A. Griffith opens the February circuit term at 11 am in Cullman. A grand jury of 64 is drawn as 67 civil cases and 82 criminal cases are set, with murder trials possible in the fourth week. Deputies served nearly a thousand documents countywide as jurors and witnesses are summoned.
Col. Chas. D. Harris Jr. testifies for TVA in U S district court that surplus power is valuable in war and that plans include power priorities and potential government control. He places TVA in zone three of district 89 and notes 100000 kilowatts of surplus under normal conditions and values of ammonium nitrate and elemental phosphorus.
Dr. Clovis Chappell of Birmingham spoke against repeal of state prohibition laws to large audiences. He addressed Central Baptist Church in Decatur Sunday night and a Hartline Methodist Church gathering Sunday afternoon, part of a countywide campaign by city leaders to keep current liquor laws.
The Decatur Rotary club marked its thirtieth year with an anniversary talk by secretary John G. McGehee. Guests included John Peach, Sam White and E. W. McLeod. Billy Wyker led the program. Julian Harris chaired the committee. McGehee traced Rotary expansion from 1905 to 1934, noting new districts in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and beyond.
Bob Taft, a well known Athens merchant, was taken ill at his home on Sunday after a mid day meal. He became suddenly indisposed and lapsed into unconsciousness shortly after finishing lunch.
The board of tax appeals postpones subpoenas for records of two Mellon dominated concerns in the inquiry into the former secretary of the treasury s income tax affairs. The delay was requested by attorneys for Union Trust Company and Pittsburgh Coal Company.
The Federal Reserve Board reports sharp improvement in cotton country finances with higher bank deposits and tax receipts, fewer bank failures, and more life insurance sales in 1934. Cotton states posted deposits of 2.969 billion, internal revenue at 467 million, life insurance at 621 million, and bank debits at 20.769 billion, while 1933 saw far worse figures.
Governor Bibb Graves returned from Washington with a bundle of federal plums for Alabama. He announced prioritizing 500000 acres of marginal land purchases, a $2,000,000 Birmingham slum clearance grant, $500,000 for rural rehabilitation and more CCC camps, $129,000 for subsistence homesteads in Jackson County, and $50,000 for illiteracy removal with civic support. He credited Dr. E L Morphet and noted other projects await the broader bill.
National Guard units and sheriff deputies guard the criminal courthouse as E. K. Harris a 22 year old negro stands trial in Nashville for allegedly attacking a 14 year old girl near Shelbyville last fall. The case follows a mob attack at Shelbyville in December where four were killed and the courthouse burned. Harris change of venue to Nashville. the trial opened with Harris in custody and a large crowd secured.
In San Francisco on February 18 an investigation began after hospital staff erroneously gave five infants diphtheria toxin instead of vaccine. Two died, three survived due to serum and maternal antibodies. Coroner’s inquest set for tomorrow.
A bomb mailed to Senator Huey P. Long in Washington failed to explode. Police investigated the device and guarded the senator as the incident prompted security concerns.
Decatur merchants and the Chamber of Commerce unveil a comprehensive Dollar Day on February 23 1935 featuring a 1935 auto parade low movie prices at Princess and Capitol theaters and a large mule sale. The event aims to draw shoppers from three county trading radios and promises rain or shine activities with a merchant committee led by Mr Ligon.
New Orleans reports show cotton prices rising sharply after news of the supreme court gold clause decision. Chicago and New York markets rallied in broad gains as trading paused on the Board of Trade while officials studied the ruling.
Four men named Price Owens Albert Troup Jack Huggins and Clarence Moore were badly hurt when a boiler exploded at the Ben Peck Lumber Co. in Athens at noon. They were taken to Powers Hospital with injuries from the blast and falling bricks. The mill owner said the boiler leaked recently and was being tested when the explosion occurred. The blast hurled bricks nearly two blocks, causing intense citywide alarm near the Agricultural school area.
Mayor James A. Nelson and the city board announce the sanitation ordinance will be enforced after a health department survey showed over 500 homes with insanitary equipment. Forty typhoid cases last year prompted action with free sanitation labor offered through the Alabama Relief Administration and supervised by the County Health Department.
The Supreme Court rules that government bonds must be paid in gold or equivalent, restricting private and federal gold clause lawsuits. Justices Hughes Roberts and Cardozo deliver the majority, McReynolds Van Der Veen Sutherland Butler dissenting. The decision affirms Congress's power to regulate currency.
