Casper N Ruehl 62 prominent Cullman county farmer was found dead by a search party led by his son near Brindley creek six miles east of Cullman. Coroner Grady Moss ruled death by own action. Funeral Thursday at First Christian church Cullman with burial in Cullman city cemetery. He survived by his widow Vera Loyd Ruehl and son Marvin Ruehl.
Morgan county Red Cross fund campaign moves forward with a $13 500 one day goal on March 1. Robert McNelly chairs the effort and names committees for special gifts oil firms transportation churches schools and more across the county.
Senate banking committee favors extending rent controls for 14 months with changes. House panel backs a one month continuation while studying longer action. Both expect a Senate-House compromise by February 29 when the current law expires. Senate bill would let increases up to 15 percent if lease runs through 1949 and allow higher rents if losses proven.
President Truman told a Labor Department gathering of women leaders that housewives can wield purchasing power to combat rising prices. He urged action on civil rights, equal pay, and removal of wage and jury service discriminations, framing women as key consumers in the cost of living battle.
Latrobe Pennsylvania February 17 nurses report the Zavada quadruplets nursed on bottles and their doctor calls their survival excellent. The 72 hour critical period ends early tomorrow as the boy and three girls stay stable. Mother Barbara Zavada to meet them soon while father Andrew, an inspector, jokes about four cigars.
In Anniston Alabama on February 17 an 11 year old boy, Eddie Dee Mitchell, died when a Calhoun County school bus collided with a lumber truck near Ohatchee. Seven students were hurt, four critically, including Christine Mitchell and Vicki Mitchell.
Decatur's new business, Esta Te and Entre x Tractor Company, opens today at 11 E Moulton Street. R A Ryan and Gene O Entre x are partners. The store offers a full line of J I traces tractors with parts and a service department. Repairs available for any model tractor.
A pedestrian bridge in Knoxville Tennessee collapsed dumping about 30 people into flood swollen First Creek. Roughly sixty persons gathered on the span when it gave way. Twelve were hospitalized and six treated for minor scratches. Some fell ten feet to the creek bank while others plunged up to thirty feet into the stream.
Sen Lister Hill of Alabama will speak at the Jefferson Jackson Day dinner in Atlanta on March 9 replacing J Howard McGrath, Democratic party chairman, who cannot attend due to another engagement. The event, postponed from March 5 to avoid a statewide teachers meeting, drew invitation to Hill after McGrath suggested Sen Tydings or Sen Johnson as guest speaker.
New York voters consider Henry Propper against Leo Isacson with Wallace support in a Bronx congressional special election. Eleanor Roosevelt backs Propper while Wallace aided Isacson to cut into the 24th district Democratic tally. Georgia events shift rally dates amid civil rights tensions. Two U S Army liaison officers Major Daniel Costello of Imogene Iowa and Major Richard Biggs of Berkeley California were detained briefly by Korean constabulary in Pyongyang while watching a parade. The Southwest bus route changes after a City Council grant. New path starts Second Avenue east to Johnston, then Fourth Avenue north to Moulton, east to Sixth, south to Johnston, resuming the regular line. Hydrants will be installed west of McCartney Street and north of the TVA canal. An extra $2000 is approved for Decatur General Hospital to cover a deficit. Mayor Summer says the city owes nothing and bills are paid. He plans street surveys to estimate damage from the freeze, with repair costs estimated at $10,000 to $15,000. A group of butane gas dealers also spoke to the Council.
Mississippi lawmakers consider a bill by Senator Houston Evans to extend state libel laws to any radio broadcaster heard in Mississippi. The measure would require service of lawful processes on the Mississippi secretary of state and treats non resident broadcasting rights as appointing the secretary to receive summonses.
A federal grand jury indicted retired Brig. Gen. Bennett E. Meyers on evading 15,658 dollars in 1941 income tax by filing a false return. The 52 year old former Army air forces equipment buyer faced charges of willful tax evasion and fraud with the 1941 amount now under time limits for prosecution. He was not present for the indictment and faces related federal charges in Washington.
The Soviet Union charged the United States Britain and France with seeking a separate peace with Germany during World War II. It cited Allen W. Dulles and a British publisher son as agents in talks in 1942 and 1941 and alleged behind the scenes negotiations in Lisbon and Switzerland. The final round of disclosures precedes publication of captured German documents.
Off Hyeres in the French Riviera an unauthorised liberty launch from the U S aircraft carrier Midway sank. An officer and seven men were unaccounted for with bodies not yet recovered. Navy and French officials debated causes as rough seas complicated search efforts.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approves a European recovery program totaling 5.3 billion dollars for the first year with 3 billion funded from the 1948 budget surplus. The plan frontloads 3 billion while most spending begins after July 1 amid election-year budget debates.
