It adds the United States backed Britain and France missteps and alleges Western powers plotted with Soviet diplomacy to threaten Poland and other states. Russia denies the pact was Soviet policy.
Riverside senior Mary Allen Spencer won the district contest at Somerville Road school and advances to the area American Legion oratorical contest in Anniston next Friday. The area event gathers speakers from about 15 Alabama counties north of Birmingham. The overall winner advances to the state contest then the national contest for a 5000 prize. Spencer has also won Riverside High and Morgan County contests with the speech The Privileges and Responsibilities Of An American Citizen.
Washington reports a shift in the administration stance against the GOP tax cut push. A high official outlined a plan to champion broad tax reform for business and individuals, time revision for later in the year, and stress that current cuts would hasten revenue loss. The move aims to counter defeat of the president’s 40 dollar tax cut proposal and offset revenue with a future reform.

Three other companions escaped with minor injuries when wind and rain forced their car off the road after attending the Moulton Scottsboro game. Freddie Leonard Jack Allen Billy Richcariston driver sustained minor injuries.
Renowned composer and conductor Ak Do Franchetti died at his Hollywood home today after a three week illness from a heart ailment. The Italian born maestro was 65 and leaves a lasting impact on grand opera worldwide.
Alma Shull sixteen, a Falkville High senior, died in a New York apartment from a gas leak in a refrigerator. Her body will be brought home for burial Monday. Relatives described the family shock and Alma’s wish to visit Broadway.
The stream surge in North Alabama and Tennessee floods disrupts rail service on L&N and Southern lines near Delrose and Columbia. The Duck River crest tops 53 feet forcing 250 Maury County families from homes. Red Cross and volunteers use amphibious craft to deliver medical supplies and food to Columbia’s riverfront district.
Sgt. W B Little of the Highway Patrol reports U S 241 blocked since Friday night as Paint Rock river rose and covered it with water. Traffic to Nashville rerouted from Ardmore through Fayetteville via Highway 110 to Lewisburg over 150 to Nashville. Water on 31 South of Elkton rises from Elk River backwaters.
Late Saturday the Columbia power system allocated a limited water supply to hospitals hotels and restaurants. The Red Cross sent a 25000 gallon water purifier from Atlanta expected to arrive early Sunday to aid the emergency. All public schools in Columbia and Columbia Military Academy were suspended for medical checks on water supplies.
Decatur transit announces routing changes to serve Riverside High School and residents. Buses will travel Ferry Street to Wilson Avenue and Oak Street, then to Ingalls Shipyard and Gestour Mill before returning, improving access for many riders.
