Hearst Testifies SLA Threatened Death Over Recording

Patricia Hearst testified at a San Francisco hearing that SLA captors warned she would be killed if she did not record a boastful message about joining the April bank robbery. She described a meeting where Angela Atwood drafted the tape, and said she was told to read it to SLA members.

Three Qualify For Morgan County Commission Seats

Morgan County Democrats opened qualifying at 9 a.m. for two county commission seats in districts three and four. Incumbents Leon Nelson and Robert Abercrombie qualified for reelection. Danny Huskey, 21, from Cotaco, joined in District Four to run against Abercrombie after working on the district road crew under CETA.

Decatur attorney Bob Harris gains local backing as Rep. Bob Jones retires from his long held 5th District seat with May primaries open. Derailment Causes Major Revenue Loss Near Greenbrier

Southern Railway officials reported a 12 car four engine derailment near Greenbrier on Sunday, causing more than 370000 dollars in damage. The 128 car train from Decatur to Chattanooga derailed at 11:20 am as it passed County Line Road, with no injuries. Five derailed engines and cars were damaged, several containers carrying fiber pads and other freight, and five trains experienced delays. Most derailed cars rested in a swampy embankment. one engine proceeded to Chattanooga, another stayed at the scene. No immediate cause was established. See DERAILMENT On Page 5.

Local Aid Grows for Guatemalan Earthquake Victims

Decatur residents donated to aid victims as Morgan County Red Cross reports early gifts totaling 345 dollars. Supplies including canned goods clothing and tents are being accepted at 431 Holly St NE daily 8 am to 5 pm. Contributions may be mailed to Morgan County Red Cross P O Box 297 Decatur 35601.
