Partly cloudy with warmer afternoon and tonight. Tuesday mostly cloudy and mild with showers. Northwest coast winds freshening Tuesday afternoon. Local items note visits, illnesses, and hospital admissions, with several addresses and names such as Leon Bryant Moulton and Jansen of Indianapolis. Public Safety Director L. B. Sullivan rejected a Madison County Grand Jury recommendation to transfer Patrolman Warren G. Jones from Marshall County. The panel accused his operations of eroding public confidence, noting 531 arrests in Marshall and 121 for speeding against truck drivers.

London reports Britain will firmly resist proposals for blocking the Chinese mainland. A Foreign Office spokesman cited Anthony Eden and said no official US proposal has been received. Britain expects Washington to consult allies before any blockade decision.
Senator Long and Senator Morse grilled General Omar Bradley in closed session over a secret report accusing high level planning of fabulous waste in overseas construction. They cited Thule Greenland and a costly base plan, questioning the need for vast air and communications facilities abroad.
Republican leaders said after a White House call they reached agreement with President Eisenhower on a broad set of laws to push this session. The plan includes statehood for Hawaii, Taft-Hartley amendments, tidelands oil control, extending old age benefits, school aid, and adding two commissioners for the District of Columbia, with action targeted by July and bills ready by May 15.
Charley Jeffries of Morgan County was shot below the heart Sunday afternoon about three and a half miles from Somerville and taken to Decatur General Hospital. Deputy Fred Clements said the wound followed an argument at a craps game with 12 or 13 men drinking. Sheriff John McCutcheon noted no warrant was sworn and the wounded man might not pursue prosecution as he recovers. Jeffries resides on the Upper River road near Bluff City.
Argentine Ambassador Dr. Leopoldo Bravo quoted Prime Minister Stalin saying war would be avoided if countries did not meddle in others affairs. The new Moscow envoy had a 45 minute interview with Stalin where the Korean conflict was not mentioned. Bravo conveyed greetings from President Peron and noted Stalin’s vigorous appearance.
Allied warplanes pounded front line positions and supply routes in Korea as ground clashes subsided. Lt. Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor took over from Gen. James A. Van Fleet after a three day front tour. Van Fleet expressed regret we did not finish the job. Clark announced Washington authorized a two division boost to the South Korean Army.
Circuit court judge S. A. Lynne opened the civil phase as the Morgan County grand jury began a 30 minute session reviewing duties and responsibilities. Foreman James Leon Roberts led the group, with members including Mack J. Johnson and Earl T. Robertson among others.
A 1952 Oldsmobile driven by Mary T. Maughn collided with a 1951 Chevrolet half ton truck driven by Omer E. Thomas on State Highway 74 nine miles east of Cullman at 5 10 P M Sunday. Elsie Richards 15 and Dottie Mae Hacker 16 sustained minor injuries and were taken to Cullman clinic by Mass Service ambulance.
The Central Daily News urged the U S to blockade the mainland Red China to end the Korean War. Kung Lun Pao backed stronger Nationalist navy and air force for the blockade. Nationalist reports cited guerrilla raids on Chekiang and Inner Mongolia, with 600000 Formosa troops ready for an offensive. Admiral Ma Chi Chuang and supporters urged bolstering forces while the Formosa deneutralization debate drew international reaction.
Floyd Smith 52 a Blackwell Motors sales manager was shot and stabbed in his Beech Street home last night. Mrs Alma Smith, 52, was wounded and in critical condition after the incident in which police say she may have shot and stabbed her husband before attempting self harm. The slain man’s daughter Beverly 15 witnessed the events. A post mortem was set for tonight to determine cause of death.
The American Federation of Labor plans a focused attack on the Taft Hartley labor law with 19 or 20 major points. The CIO Executive Board criticized Taft's changes as insufficient and liberalized plus new anti union restrictions. A top AFL committee has studied the question for weeks and its report awaits AFL Executive Council review in the second week of the midwinter session at the Monte Carlo Hotel.
