Sunday outlook to bring clouds and colder air with showers in the East and South along the coast. Various local items include births and health updates at Hamil clinic, court assignments for Judge Lynne, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and measles absences at Flint school.
A damaged Eastern Air Lines constellation with a dead crewman and 65 others landed safely near Bunnel Florida after reporting a ditching. Flight attendant Gilbert Folz of Evansville Indiana died when engine failure caused a propeller piece to strike him. Notables aboard included Winthrop Rockefeller and Henry Merrill as rescue efforts moved in.
Grain prices rebounded little while retail staples such as bread flour lard and select pork cuts were expected to cost less next week in some chain stores. Hog price declines and wholesale stockpiles supported cheaper meat, with Chicago averages dropping 90 cents weekly to 23.75. Meat buyers in Pittsburgh anticipated cheaper meat in the coming days as prices eased. Wheat and corn showed mixed movement amid volatility.
Morgan County finished the 1948 March of Dimes campaign with a Saturday total of 3850 and aims for over 4000. Chairman Bill Eyster credited weather and cooperation from county workers and students for a strong result. Contributions included American Legion Auxiliary 10 dollars, Somerville Road school 8.60, Cotaco school 32.20, Priceville school 29.10, and local groups adding several dollars.
Morgan county drives for the Birmingham Southern Howard college effort require a Monday 10 A M meeting at Central Baptist church. Ministers are asked to bring a layman. Two City Electric Department workers Dennis Norris and Kirk Bentley were recalling to Mitchell apartments when they noticed smoke boiling from an unfurnished unit soon to be occupied by Mr and Mrs Ford. They forced entry and found several pieces of furniture on fire caused by an electric heater. Firefighters were summoned and chairs plus a wagon of papers were destroyed though most Ford belongings were saved.
Aeronautics Director Asa Rountree Jr. announced a grant of 16 250 dollars to Decatur from the Alabama Department of Aeronautics during a Saturday briefing in Montgomery. Rountree stated the funds will support airport improvements and expansion plans.
An Eastern Air Lines Constellation returning from the Atlantic landed safely in Miami after reporting engine failure and a fire. One crew member died and several passengers were injured among the 66 aboard the Boston to Miami flight under Captain W E Johnson.
In Montgomery on February 7 a Washington lawyer told the American Association of University Women state convention that women’s greatest handicap is themselves. Miss Marjorie Temple, a Maryland bar member, urged legal reform and outlined AAUW growth from 17 founders in 1882 to over 1,300 Alabama members. New officers elected included Dr. Katherine Vickery president, Mrs. R. E. Tidsall vice president, Mrs. W. T. Jordan recording secretary, Mrs. Jeane Te.., and Mrs. E. W. Norris treasurer.
Decatur police arrest John Blackwell and Joe Griffin after boot and mud tracks tie them to recent break ins. Blackwell confesses to the Southern Cafe and Jones Coal Company burglaries, while Griffin denies charges. The pair, about 18, are jailed pending burglary charges as six other break ins remain unsolved.
The FBI announced the arrest of five men in Miami and New Orleans on charges of violating the neutrality act. They allegedly planned a bombing action against a Latin American country using two PBY airplanes and planned to receive $30,000 each. One suspect, Browder, remained in the United States while Capt. Mason was being returned to the U S via Panama.
Morgan County aims to raise 13500 in the annual Red Cross fund drive announced by campaign chairman Robert McNelly. The March 1 start date accompanies five reasons supporting the quota including disaster relief costs, wartime veteran needs, increased servicemen, the blood program and rising prices since 1939. The national budget calls for 97 million for combined programs, offset by 22 million in uncommitted surplus.
A fresh cold wave swept into the nation from Canada driving snow and freezing drizzle across the Midwest and toward the East. Rain stretched from St. Louis to the gulf while areas north of St. Louis turned precipitation into snow as temperatures plunged below freezing in places like North Dakota.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower retires as Chief of Staff and hands over command to General Omar N. Bradley in a ceremony attended by President Truman and top officials. Bradley accepts with two words I do Eisenhower plans memoirs and bone fishing in Florida. He notes manpower as the army's serious current problem and recalls the Cherbourg invasion moment.
Frank M. Hart of Falkville qualified in the probate office to run for the third district seat on the Morgan County Board of Revenue and Control, joining a field of seven candidates in the spring primary.
The South's governors met in Wakulla Springs Florida on February 7 and adopted a resolution denouncing President Truman's civil rights program. Led by Gov Strom Thurmond the group called for a new conference within 40 days to oppose the national party leadership program and to form a special committee to study Southern problems arising from the proposal.
Bonner a delegate-at-large candidate for the national Democratic convention withdraws his pledge to back Truman as party leader. He cites Truman’s civil rights program as proof he is an arch enemy of the white South and says he will not vote for Truman for president, though he will support Democratic nominees after the May primary.
Gov. Thurmond introduces a substitute resolution urging Southern delegates to back a favorite son or remain unpledged. Gov. Laney of Arkansas supports, while the others trail. Texas Gov. Jester asks Wright to speak for his measure. The push marks the conference entering political wrangling over regional education.
