Senator McKellar denounces Gordon Clapp’s TVA board bid and threatens to oppose confirmation on the Senate floor if the public works committee advances him. Clapp defends integrity while Tennessee and Alabama lawmakers press for his confirmation amid anti communist allegations.
Morgan county jail houses Miller McCray A J Oliver Harriet Ross and Sarah Davis on charges tied to a reported incident. Sheriff C B Humphrey says warrants were sworn by Bessie Hines who alleges two women McCray and Oliver dragged her to a home during preliminary hearings, Judge W H Long presiding.
A fresh cold air mass from Canada plunges the Midwest into deep freeze with 40 to 60 mph winds. Dakotas and Minnesota report more than 15 below zero as eastern and southern regions see some relief with milder readings. Forecasters say the cold front will reach the mid Atlantic and North Atlantic states by Sunday morning, but not as severe as in the Midwest.
Britain imposes a coal export ban and cuts electricity and gas rations after a three week cold spell. The government forbids refueling coal ships and tightens controls on exports to prevent further factory closures and rising unemployment of about 200000.
In Lexington Georgia two men a white man and a Negro were arrested in the death of elderly farmer W R Cofer whose charred body was found in the ruins of his home on January 26 Sheriff Carl Broach said the Negro identified as Lauren Porter 39 a sawmill worker stated Cofer was shot during a robbery and his body burned in the fire during the house destruction.
Felipe Brocato cafe operator reports a burglar stole $5000 in currency from a dresser drawer in his Birmingham home yesterday. He had hidden the money earlier in a paper sack before heading to the cafe and bank. Return home in evening revealed the loss.
Harold E. Stassen, seeking the Republican nomination, urged a secret majority vote by workers before strikes and backed a cooling off period and an independent federal labor conciliator. He demanded limits on mass picketing and annual union financial statements while advocating election of union officers by secret ballot. Taft challenged the proposal as too drastic amid broader Wagner Act reforms.
Funeral services for Rev Oscar Pendleton Spiegel 80 of Falkville will be Saturday at 3 30 p m at the First Christian Church Birmingham. He died Thursday night at Cullman Hospital after six days illness. He organized most Christian churches in Alabama and pastored in Anniston Birmingham Montgomery and other cities. He served as chaplain of Masons and related orders. He is survived by a brother Horace Spiegel and several nieces and nephews. Burial at Oak Hill Cemetery with Drinkard of Cullman directing.
Alabama’s unemployment compensation payout for the year ended Sept 30 reached a record high despite strong demand for workers. About 88,000 claimants received 17.903 million dollars, with Jefferson Mobile and Talladega counties receiving over half of disbursements.
General MacArthur instructed Yoshida to hold another general election soon after the current Diet sessions. The move aims to accelerate the political process ahead of the new constitution, amid rising opposition to the conservative government.

The Rudnicks of Brookline Massachusetts and others from Boston Buck's Cavern Pa and Mrs Engleman suffered bracelets earrings and cash losses totaling tens of thousands with valuables hidden by the victims and a ring saved by a mouth hold.
Informants say Britain considers a compromise that would allow 100000 European displacees to enter a semi autonomous Jewish province in Palestine. Bevin and Creech Jones favor a five year partition with mutual secession rights and expanded Jewish immigration.
