Poll tax figures compiled by Elbert Weaver show $6,669 collected by February 1, up from $6,169 last year. About 3,755 residents paid to vote, plus veterans and others, bringing projected Morgan County eligibility to around 8,000 pending registration.
Eighteen mine workers died in a Utah coal mine blast at Standardville with three others missing. Rescue crews located 18 bodies, 16 identified, and four rescued including Rubio Monroe Andy Dougherty Gerald Banasky and another unidentified man. Cause of the explosion remained undetermined.
John Patterson, Morgan county legislator and civic leader, will be awarded the Kiwanis roving cup for outstanding service in 1929. The ceremony Sunday at 2:30 PM in Riverside High School auditorium will be presided by Kiwanis President John White with Rev. E N Hart officiating. The program includes addresses, solos, and a benediction.
The Morgan County Medical Society met Thursday at West Westminster Presbyterian church with twenty one members and one visitor. Dr A M White presented a paper on Pneumonia and led free discussion. Dr E R Emmens will discuss pleurisy at the next meeting.
Mrs. J W Garner of Huntsville will return home this afternoon after visiting her daughter Mrs R T Tyler. She will be accompanied by Mrs Tyler and Garner’s granddaughter on the trip.

In Sallisaw Oklahoma on February 7 Jesse Maynard was held for trial on charges of poisoning his wife to gain access to his housemaid Miss Lora Roden. The dead woman left three children and poison was found in her viscera during the preliminary hearing. Roden, 23, testified and was later jailed on unspecified charges.
Judge W. T. Lowe today passed sentence on defendants found guilty in County Court since the bench opened last Monday. Convictions were secured over four days, with those found guilty to begin serving terms or pay fines and costs.
Members of the three Junior Order United American Mechanics will meet at 7:30 tonight in the Albany Council No. 22 hall for a joint session. A very interesting program has been planned for the event.
Lawrence County Farm Bureau directors and county agents met at the county high school vocational building in Moulton on February 6 1930 with bankers teachers and officials to approve plans for dairy creamery growth 4 H enrollment and improved farm practices The unanimous resolution sets targets for cream dairying poultry and 4 H projects while urging continued use of Alabama Experiment Station recommendations on feeds pastures fertilizers crops and soil building.

The Alabama public service commission ordered a general revision of water rates for private fire protection in thirty eight towns served by the Alabama Water Service company Warrior Water company and the Alabama Utilities company. Rates range from 4.00 dollars per year for a one inch hydrant to 50.00 dollars per year for a two and a half inch hydrant with quantity discounts. Municipalities affected include Aniston Bessemer Decatur Atalla Jasper Oneonta Greensboro Dora Girard Russellville Albertville Boaz Leeds Irondale Fort Payne Collinsville Pritchard Chicago Bridgeport York Wetumpka Abbeville Bay Minnette Carbon Hill Eutaw Geneva Newton Ozark Puichard Sheffield Tuscumbia Andalusia Simpson Bra Cordova Parrish Winfield.
The Decatur council approved the League of Women Voters plan to place an electric sign over Keller Memorial Bridge reading Decatur Welcomes You. The fire water and light committee recommended city funding for lighting for 1930 and 1931, with payments through 11 p.m. each night, pending Alabama Power Company approval.
About 60 to 70 Decatur merchants attended a Kiwanis club event at the YMCA. A chicken dinner preceded remarks by M R Rankin and John Patterson who urged civic cooperation and ongoing trade growth. The public affairs committee led by W W Fussell organized an evening noted for fellowship and amusement.
The board of mayor and aldermen in regular session authorized the retention of one special officer upon the recommendation of Alden D Patterson. The officer had served for the past sixty days and will continue in service.
The board approved a new gas rate schedule for Anniston and Tuscaloosa on petitions from Alabama Utilities Service Co. The base rate charges include 1.50 per 500 cf, 1.50 per 1000 cf for the next 2 cf, and 0.65 per 1000 cf for higher usage, with a 1.50 minimum monthly bill. An optional commercial schedule sets a 1.00 monthly meter charge and tiered usage charges, plus a 1.00 maximum hourly rate. An industrial service option adds a 2.00 monthly service charge with 60 cents per 1000 for the first 50,000 cf, 35 cents for the next 150,000 cf, and 30 cents for over 200,000 cf, plus a separate wholesale use provision.
Chairman Roy Billings pledges to keep faith with the people and maintain a real first class and efficient fire department. The statement signals ongoing support for municipal fire services amid local concerns.
