Alabama Senators Lister Hill and John Sparkman introduced a bill to set farm base acreage for each cotton farm equal to 1957 allotment plus 20 percent. The plan, tied to Soil Bank payments, would prevent losses from unplanted quotas and propose metes and bounds acreage measurement on request to ensure fair surveys.
Montgomery Alabama Public Safety Director Bill Lyerly submitted a two year budget request proposing a 400000 annual increase to finance 40 new highway patrol officers and 10 for the driver license division. The department currently employs about 300 patrolmen and seeks local five mill ad valorem taxes in some counties such as Jefferson and Calhoun to fund the plan.
The legislative school study committee voted to recommend a 25 million dollar bond issue to fund building programs at state supported colleges. It tentatively approved a constitutional amendment proposal to permit each.
Two Decatur residents were hospitalized after separate traffic crashes yesterday. Marguerit Worthington, 39, of 718th Ave SE, was left with severe injuries to her left hand when her 1942 Ford collided with a 1947 Lincoln at Canal and Vine Streets. her car overturned. Mrs. Jayme St. John, 52, of 1307 8th Ave SE, sustained shock and bruises when a three-car sequence on US 31 North near Kelly Memorial River Bridge involved her husband’s 1950 Studebaker. Traffic Officer Euel Thompson investigated. no charges were filed.
In Reno Nevada authorities evacuated the black square Masonic Temple and nearby buildings after a gas flow raised fears of a second explosion following yesterday’s propane blast in downtown Reno.
Authorities disclosed details of a January burglary at H O Minor's Jewelry Store on West Main Street. Between 400 and 500 dollars in merchandise vanished including wrist watches rings and beads. Four suspects, Talmadge Sheppard Floyd Reeves and Ernest Reeves with an unnamed fourth, were arrested on concealing stolen property charges.
Morgan County hosts a March of Dimes drive with a county total of $5 920 to date led by Pete Henderson. Hartselle reports $274.75 from Mothers March, coin collectors, Coffee Day and Blue Crutch Day. American Legion Auxiliary in Hartselle, led by Mrs. Lucille Lindsey, coordinated efforts. Decatur reports incomplete totals due to worker reporting delays. Henderson urges mailers be returned to P O Box 1537.
A propane air gas leak caused three blasts in downtown Reno Nevada destroying five buildings. Two people died and 41 were injured with four dozen unaccounted found safe later. Fire chief praises a clothing store employee who warned others allowing evacuations before the blasts.
Alabama school tax collections for the first four months of the fiscal year rose 6.12 percent over last year, according to Dr. Austin R. Meadows. He said the gain keeps estimates on schedule, though the schedule covers only 92 percent of a higher budget. income taxes are excluded from the 6.12 percent figure due to different calculations.
The Army testified before a House panel that eight weeks of full time duty provide as much training as two years of weekly National Guard drills and summer camps. Brig. Gen. Creighton Abrams argued for six months of active duty training for all new guardsmen, citing field tests showing Guard units trained less than active Army units.
Cullman announces a new furniture factory led by L T Burnham to start operations at the Leigeber Building on Highway 31 S. The plant will rent from John Leigeber, hire ten experienced workers initially, and aim to double staffing by fall. Manufacturing will cover about 9 000 square feet on the ground floor with offices nearby.
Two Cullman men died in a head on collision between a pickup and a trailer truck two miles from Guntersville on Alabama Highway 112. Ray Erskine Swindle Jr. 32 and Henry Alvie Sartian 31 were killed instantly. Sartian was driving the pickup with Swindle as a passenger. The other truck's driver was not immediately identified.
Agriculture Stabilization Committee offices in Morgan Limestone Cullman and Lawrence counties report overflow of farmers applying for soil bank allotments. In Cullman County enough applications have been received to deplete 1987 season funds. Cotton program applications accepted through March 1 and corn through March 8 on a first come first served basis.
W Raymond Thomason died unexpectedly today at age 59 while riding a city bus in Birmingham on his way to work. He was a former U S Marshal for the Northern District of Alabama and was known for long service and steady demeanor in law enforcement.
Rome A Betts of New York executive director of the American Heart Assn addressed over 140 county association members and guests at the Morgan County Heart Assn annual dinner. He said the research program seeds the country and will yield a rich harvest, noting funds largely support research and industrial research is possible. The event followed a technical clinic with three national cardiovascular experts at the Country Club as part of National Heart Week activities.
President Eisenhower said the government may resort to inflation controls if business and labor fail to reach a voluntary agreement. He did not specify the type of controls and noted Israel’s compliance with UN demands to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and Gulf of Aqaba. He avoided committing on possible UN economic sanctions. He referenced his January State of the Union call for price restraint and urged a long term, in everyone’s best interests approach.
Washington reporters describe a partial victory for Southerners as House Judiciary Committee hearings on civil rights legislation were extended. Chairman Celler announced he would not end hearings as planned, though committee opposition to extension remained and a temporary truce was reached after a day of delays.
