Governor James E. Folsom endorses Phillip J. Hamm as his successor and urges defeat of obstructive program fees. Hamm, now Commissioner of Revenue, is introduced as the administration’s choice amid a two hour rally in Montgomery. The event includes Adjutant General James Saliba and Judge T. C. Almon touting three years of administration.
A West Virginia state police sergeant said an eight year old boy admitted placing bricks and a board on tracks to test what would happen. A Baltimore and Ohio freight train derailed nine cars after striking the blockade near New Haven. No injuries reported and no charges yet filed.
The Atomic Energy Commission plans to start designs this year for reactors to propel ships and aircraft. The Arco testing station will develop compact high radiation density reactors for aircraft propulsion and include an experimental breeder reactor and a material testing reactor. The breeder will test producing more fissionable material than it consumes using molten metal cooling.
Fifty four weekend arrests across four counties are reported this morning. Courtland sees two held for drunkenness amid burglary rumors at the junior high cafeteria. Sheriff Sandlin of Limestone county says five youths were taken into custody, four for public drunkenness and one for DWI, with two Iowa teens later released after confessing to stealing an Indiana filling station.
A court ruled that setting a minimum price for cleaning suits and topcoats would not improve public health. The State Board of Dry Cleaners sought to bar a business from charging under the minimum, but Superior Judge Clarence Hanson denied the injunction, saying higher prices would not raise health standards.
Congressman Robert E. Jones introduces a bill to raise Farmers Home Administration loan limits from 3500 to 7000 for initial production and adjustment and from 5000 to 10000 for total indebtedness. Repayment would extend from five to ten years on small loans and to twenty years on larger ones. The plan aims to help farmers finance diversification soil and equipment improvements amid postwar price and quota changes.
A pre dawn fire swept a three story frame hotel in Eureka Montana killing five people. Among the deceased were Browning high school basketball players John Powell De lano Grayson and Ed La France and local residents Charles Cameron William Peterson and an em ye railway clerk. The Montana hotel also housed the post office a bar five apartments and Eureka's only telephone. Other guests escaped by jumping from windows as Browning players remained in town after a game with Eureka.

In Montgomery on February 6 the state argued no discrimination occurred when property tax assessments for Alabama Power Co. were raised last year. The defense answers complaints from 16 utilities and railroads challenging a Revenue Department order to tax up to 60 percent of value. Alabama Power says the order violates the 14th Amendment due process.
Police reported a burglar was frightened away from B F Erwin’s home at 622 Eighth Avenue West early today after forcing a South living room window and tampering with a light in the bathroom. Erwin said he woke at 1:15 a M but did not see the intruder. No items were taken. Officers Sgt James Collier Sgt J T Broadrick Pack Self and Charles Smith led the investigation with no arrest yet.
Dr Allison Williams Bunkley, an assistant professor in the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton, died after a 32 caliber revolver he used in a Russian roulette game misfired. Five friends and a guest watched as the cylinder was spun and the bullet struck his temple at his 25th birthday celebration. He died on arrival at Princeton Hospital. He was the son of retired Rear Admiral Joel W Bunkley and related to Senator John Sharpe Williams.
Weather progress aids search for Air Force C 54 vanished January 26 with 44 aboard. Crews to resume interior British Columbia patrols if conditions permit while a B 29 bomber hunted an SOS signal north of Spokane and other signals from Alaska to the U S Canada border were checked. Distress signals traced to Denmark.
In Washington a demand was voiced for a probe into Klaus Fuchs and possible American contacts. Senator Bridges urged a search in high places to uncover any U S ties and determine if they connected to influential figures.
J Edgar Hoover told the congressional atomic committee of the FBI’s involvement in the arrest of Klaus Fuchs, a German born scientist accused of passing atomic secrets to Russia. Aided by Clyde Tolson and L B Nichols, Hoover said no public statement was planned. Senator Bridges sought a search for American contracts connected to the case.
An anonymous source with atomic knowledge tells a reporter that many wartime documents are missing and several other individuals may be involved with Fuchs. A London editor, predicting Soviet testing, claims hydrogen bombs have been used, while Kenneth De Courcy cites three H bombs and one explosion, without dates or locations. See EFFORT on Page 2.
Romine Lee Stomer and Ernest Robinson were involved in a Saturday afternoon dispute at Robinson's home. Stomer was shot in the right shoulder with a fractured arm. Robinson was taken to jail. Stomer, about 22, is reported in good condition at Decatur General Hospital.
P R ev Herman Humke and about 1200 congregants at the Presbyterian church heard Colleen Townsend Sunday preach the gospel during a film premier visit to Punxsutawney Pennsylvania. The star declared she will forsake acting to follow God and drew a turnout far exceeding the normal 300.
The Los Angeles raid era report says mobster Mickey Cohen and his wife survived a dawn explosion at his radar protected home. Police say the blast damaged the residence and the bedroom where Cohen sleeps was shattered. Cohen, his wife, and a maid were present but unharmed.
Burglars entered through a bursar office window at Alabama Polytechnic Institute Saturday evening and broke a vault door with an electric drill. Only a small cash amount was in the vault, with 37 cents left in change, and papers scattered. Police reported the burglary occurred between 4 PM Saturday and 8 AM today.
Alabama voters face a fight over the Democratic executive committee which wields control of party affairs for four years. The panel can even call or cancel primaries and nominate governors and state officials. With power concentrated in Montgomery, party unity hinges on who wins the committee seats in every congressional district.
In New York a union spokesman said a possible postponement of a planned telephone strike could be discussed if federal mediators request it. Ernest Weaver, CIO Communications Workers of America, says delay is possible if gains are achieved. In Washington President Truman invokes Taft-Hartley and creates a three member board headed by David L. Cole to study the coal dispute with a one week deadline.
Federal mediators press talks between Western Electric AT&T subsidiary and CIO Communications Workers of America with under 48 hours to avert a nationwide strike. Cyrus S. Ching of the mediation service expects progress by afternoon. No change in the dispute over wages hours vacations pensions and training is evident on the eve of the meeting.
President Truman seeks a court order to compel soft coal miners to resume work within about 80 days, amid a strike by United Mine Workers led by John L. Lewis. Officials say the panel of inquiry will meet in Washington to begin work, as idle miners and dwindling coal supplies threaten industries and heating needs nationwide.
Mrs Rose Appich Stoler aged 60 remained in critical condition with two bullet wounds in the chest after her husband Charles S Stoler 60 a Richmond jeweler shot himself after an apparent mercy killing attempt. Police said he died by his own hand, believing he had killed his wife who had suffered a stroke and was bedridden since June 1948.
