In Chicago on February 4, Merry Fahrney's record shows two divorces and one annulment after a hearing that split from Baron Arturo Berlingieri of Italy. Fahrney alleged cruelty, while the Baron denied it and the judge issued a decree after a two hour session.
Four of five convicts who escaped from the prison at Speigner Alabama were recaptured early today in a nearby swamp. James Loftin, held for burglary and grand larceny, remained at large. L Holmes, prison bookkeeper, said the escapees hid behind a wall then cut a wire enclosure and fled. Recaptured were Harry Bell murder inmate, Sammie Wolover robbery convict, J M Pitts grand larceny inmate, and Wade Harold Montgomery grand larceny convict. Loftin believed surrounded.
President Roosevelt signed legislation to expand federal mortgage insurance liberalization to spark a large private home building program. Signing occurred last night in Washington on Feb 4.

President Roosevelt said he may take a three day holiday at Hyde Park New York over George Washingtons birthday. He told reporters tentative plans call for him to leave Washington February 19 and return February 24 for three full days away.
Victor Pawlaski, chairman of the Farwell village board, stepped into a waste receptacle fire at the state treasurer's office in Lincoln. His trouser leg caught fire and was extinguished with water from a basin by office aides without severe injuries.
Atlanta Feb 4 Several Southern states already have anti lynching laws similar to the Mississippi measure. Representative Hilton Waits says the bill shows the South will handle its own affairs and carries no federal features. The act defines lynching as mob violence resulting in death and allows prosecution by state officials, with emphasis on prompt action by prosecutors.
Decatur city council discussed 1938 appropriations including 200 for National Youth Aviation recreation program and a minimum wage plan for a new electric light plant. They reviewed 42 000 in license income, collected 82 percent of ad valorem tax, and authorized bond purchases and a land sale.

A negro boy confessed to officers that he attempted to burn the Boyles school in Birmingham because he was tired of going to school. Fire Chief Harry Burns said the incident occurred today and the boy was turned over to juvenile court authorities. Damages to the school were estimated at a figure not stated in existing text.

Chauncey Sparks the sole declared Alabama gubernatorial candidate visited Decatur with former State Senator Hildreth of Huton. Sparks, a Eufaula resident, has a long record in Alabama politics and advocates government economy during his statewide tour through the Tennessee Valley.
The American Federation of Labor executive council today deferred its policy toward the committee for industrial organization until next week. President William Green said a decision on expelling unions suspended from the federation would be made Monday or Tuesday.
A Cleveland chaired committee presented twenty three proposals to President Roosevelt to combat the recession. They urge repeal of the undistributed profits tax and support for private and federal loans, government expenditure cuts, and a national advisory council of small businesses.
Six cases against taxi drivers for operating without license were continued until Saturday morning. City patrolmen arrested the drivers under the new Decatur city cab ordinance. Continuance sought because attorney A. Lynne is out of town until Saturday.

A Spanish government communique reports the British freighter Alcira, 1 387 tons, sunk by two planes while attempting to breach the Insurgent blockade en route from Gibraltar to Barcelona. All 26 aboard, including an observer, were rescued by a government sloop and fishing boats.
A young man was fined in city court for petty larceny in connection with the alleged theft of gasoline and other articles from an automobile on Holly Street. The incident occurred about 9:30 p.m. Thursday night. two men were arrested while a third escaped. Only one charge was prosecuted in city court.

Three inmates were killed and two wounded at a Massachusetts state infirmary when a 70 year old inmate, John Mack of Chelsea, fired a revolver and fled. He was captured three hours later in Lowell. The dead were Michael O Keefe Edward Mercier and James Magee. The wounded were Joseph ODonnell and John Lewis. Mack said he acted after being called a bad name. Authorities traced the pistol to a mail order source as investigations into hospital deaths continue.
Clarksville officials announced a contract with the Tennessee Valley Authority on February 4. Mayor W. D. Hudson predicted the city would have TVA power by June 1, marking a major utility development for the town.
