GM Lays Off Plant Workers Amid Slump in Sales
General Motors announced plans to lay off 86 000 workers across 10 plants due to weak demand for standard size cars. About 48 000 will be on temporary furlough up to 10 days, 38 000 on indefinite layoff starting January and February. Major plants affected include Buick Flint and Pontiac Michigan, with shifts cut at Linden New Jersey and St. Louis Missouri among others. The move follows a 126 000-worker layoff the prior December and aims to align production with a 1974 sales forecast of 13 to 13.5 million units amid oil shortages and energy fears.
