Taft Urges Early Study of $100 Pensions for All

Social security officials say a $100 pension at age 65 would cost about $12 billion yearly, payable by taxes. Taft urges an immediate senate finance committee study while noting current pensions would rise modestly to $25 a month minimum and $126 for an aged couple. The move aligns with election-year platforms and expanding coverage, but inflation fears persist as unions press for broader pension gains while economists weigh long-term effects on prices and investment. The piece views pensions as a wage-structure byproduct, not direct spending, and considers the potential dampening or amplifying effects on the economy beyond 1950.
