William J. Edwards former Decatur resident now in Adamsville Tennessee will receive the presidents medal for saving CCC worker Jessie A. Hesson who was shocked and unconscious after touching a water faucet and light in the Adamsville CCC camp. Edwards, recently appointed superintendent of the Pickwick Electric Membership Corporation, rushed to the camp and performed artificial respiration for hours until breathing returned.
W A O Neal, 72, a prominent Hart selle citizen, died at his home after several weeks illness. Funeral at Ethel church near Hart selle at 2 p m Thursday with burial at Bethel. survivors include a widow, two sons Levi and Jimmy, two daughters Mrs H C Dorr and Miss Ellen O Neal, five grandchildren, a great grandchild, and a niece. Active pallbearers listed. honorary pallbearers named.
Lupe Velez, noted actress, nursed her ill husband Johnnie Weissmuller and prepared to contest an accountant claim for 1800 dollars for 1931 income tax services. She denied the claim after posting 1800 dollars bond, as Joseph Goldin pursued the action following a default judgment. Weissmuller was ill with a heavy cold.
J Edgar Hoover sat beside a private wire to the home of kidnapped 10 year old Charles Mattson in Tacoma Wash as DOJ agents take charge of the search. Agents halted local activity and did not explain the pause while Dr W W Mattson said there was a stalemate. A ransom ad reportedly in Seattle papers led to negotiations. rumors spread of a suspect seen near Portland.

In Tangipahoa parish three miles north of Independence two trucks collided in dense fog. Gred Getwan, 23, of Brookhaven Mississippi, was killed and Grady Rogers, 21, of Jackson Mississippi, the other driver, was injured as both trucks were demolished.

She was a longtime city resident and active in religious work.
An explosion from a gasoline can during a party at T. G. Roberts home near Loganport La. started a fire that killed Betty Jo Plunkett five, Mrs. Dewey Bates and her infant son. Betty Jo’s father Dick Plunkett suffered severe burns and faced possible hand amputation as rescuers battled the flames.
Mrs. Bobbie Lee 21 from Atlanta admitted shooting J. D. Atkins in his downtown room after a quarrel. Atkins, a Montgomery tractor factory worker, was wounded with a bullet through the rip during the dispute. Lee said she planned to tell her husband she was coming home on the midnight bus.
The Decatur city council will meet in special session to discuss an admission tax on moving pictures. An ordinance set a one cent tax on certain admissions and two cents on higher prices, with proceeds to charity. Since enactment there has been debate and a repeal effort is expected. The tax was to take effect January 1.
William L. Marion a Morgan county farmer died at 5 40 p m Monday at his home Trinity route 1 aged 77 Funeral services were held at City cemetery chapel Rev L D Patterson pastor of First Methodist church Brown directing burial Survived by widow three sons O W I L and R E Marion six grandchildren and a sister Mrs Beulah Pryor He was formerly a L N Railroad employee in local shops before turning to farming.
Funeral services for Mrs Annie M Pitt age 63 were held at Hames cemetery in Lawrence County Friday with Rev John Robert son of Trinity Methodist Church officiating. Burial was by Highsmith of Moulton. Mrs Pitt died suddenly at her Trinity Route 1 home. Survived by husband R H Pitt three sons Floyd of Decatur James and William of Trinity three daughters Irene Pitt of Nashville Miss Chrystine Pitt and Miss Fannie Mae Pitt of Trinity. She had belonged to the Methodist Church for 48 years.

In Jackson Kentucky on December 29 a courtroom shooting left Johnny Shepherd dead and injured Moss Noble and Moore. Viola Wickline opened fire during an examining trial on Harvey Gabbard’s murder, injuring bystanders before being arrested with her husband. Police elsewhere in St Louis pursued a man tied to Claude McGee after a fatal night shooting.

Through courtesy of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce forty representatives from sixteen cities and two counties of the Tennessee Valley visited Decatur today for a meeting at city hall to discuss municipal ownership of utilities. Fifteen automobiles formed the motorcade leaving city hall at 1 30 visiting industrial plants and other points of interest with officials from Alabama Mississippi Tennessee and Georgia in attendance.
