Missing man heard from in Alabama mystery

Ground was broken for Decatur's new $30 000 incinerator to be built east of Bee Line highway between Laurel and Church streets. Mayor Harris officiated as bids from J B McBride and Son of Decatur were accepted at 26 400 with a total project cost near 41 000 after expenses. Public Works Administration grant 13 950. The plant, 28 by 32.2 by 32 feet with a 90 foot smokestack, will burn garbage to destroy disease germs and reduce dumping in the TVA basin.

Fireworks stores explode as blaze damages shops on Moulton Street
Fire at the 100 block of W Moulton Street destroyed a large fireworks stock owned by E W Phillips and caused extensive damage to B A Turner's store next door. Man amputates right hand after stoker mishap
Henry Dennett a 32 year old public school janitor in Minneapolis self amputated his right hand after a Christmas night stoker accident. He used a pocket knife to perform a wrist amputation, tied a crude tourniquet and called the hospital. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Hartselle for Postmaster J L Day who died of a heart attack at Benevolent Hospital. Day had served as mayor three terms and was postmaster since 1933. He is survived by his wife a daughter Mrs R R Duke and two grandchildren. Interment followed at Hartselle Cemetery with Peck directing.

Four Children Die in Blazing Huntington Home
Four children aged eight months to six years died when a two story log house owned by Mr and Mrs John Garthee burned near Huntington West Virginia. Garthee was burned trying to save them while the mother escaped unharmed. Coroner F X Schuller said a defective chimney likely started the fire which consumed the home before the father could wake. He placed one child in a closet as others attempted to flee where they perished.
