Partly cloudy and much colder across the north today
The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and a cold wave in the extreme north this afternoon with a few showers in the south tonight. Lows reach 24 to 32 in the north and 18 to 24 in the extreme north. Wednesday remains partly cloudy and much colder with moderate to fresh northerly winds along the coast.
Firecrackers On Porch Trigger Fatal Shot In Mississippi
In Fulton Mississippi five youths were throwing firecrackers on Curtis Spencer's porch when a shotgun discharged. John V Wiseman 19 died instantly. Spencer 60 was charged with murder but released on bond after a coroner's jury ruled the shooting unintentional. Wiseman was the son of Chester and Mrs Wilemon.

Chief Deputy Riley Found Dead at Home
Lawrence county officials report Chief Deputy Sheriff Fred L. Riley age 35 was discovered dead from a single gunshot wound at his home eight miles from Moulton late Sunday night. His wife Mary Byars Riley found him. a .38 pistol lay on a daybed as a radio played loudly. Coroner J H Highsmith said the investigation continues. He is survived by his wife a daughter Betty seven and a son Fred Jr with services held at the Moulton Methodist church.

Train Collision Near Lineville Injures Several
The Rock Island Imperial passenger train bound from Chicago to Kansas City crashed into a stalled Westbound freight two miles east of Lineville Iowa. The diesel engine overturned and caught fire. Engineers were severely injured and several passengers hurt but none in serious condition.

Burglaries Lead Christmas Weekend Arrests in Counties
Over the holiday four county district recorded 52 arrests. In Morgan county three men from Decatur were jailed for car burglaries by Limestone deputies. Andrew W. Kirby 21 Ben Kirby 17 Woodrow Leeton 34 all of Decatur were charged. Ben Kirby confessed. Bonds listed at 500 none posted. Others included six public drunkenness arrests, one Prohibition violation and one driving without license.

Coroner Labels Death as Own Action in Shotgun Tragedy
Coroner Joe Morrison ruled the Christmas Eve shotgun death of 20 year old Charlie Lewis Thomas as death by own action. Thomas, from Lacon, died at R C Royer’s home about 6 45 p m from a single blast to the chest. He was to be inducted December 29 and funeral services were set for 2 p m at Evergreen Methodist Church with burial in the adjacent cemetery. Survivors include his parents four brothers two sisters and a grandmother. Sheriff Humphrey and Deputy Barnes investigated the incident.

Limestone Lad Killed While Playing With Gift
A five year old boy, Billy Jo Shivers of Chattanooga, died after being struck by a car while playing with a toy wagon on Christmas Day in Limestone County near his grandmother Mrs. J. C. Malone’s Athens home. In other incidents, 70 year old Tom Berry of Town Creek was critically injured after a motorist blinded by oncoming lights struck him near Town Creek, with police noting a broken leg and nose and multiple cuts.

Two Christmas Day Traffic Accidents In Decatur
City police investigated two Decatur traffic crashes on Christmas Day with no injuries but minor damage. The first at Sixth Avenue East and Moulton Street involved a 1939 Chevrolet driven by E M Tabscott and a 1949 Ford. Tabscott was arrested on DWI charges. The second at Davis and Wells Street involved a 1938 Buick driven by Robert Ezell and a 1939 Chevrolet owned by John W Brook.

Fred Van Murphree Dies After Birmingham Accident
Auburn student Fred Van Murphree 17 died at Jefferson-Hillman Hospital Birmingham after a Thursday traffic crash. He was one of four pedestrians struck while waiting to cross after a sorority dance.
