Stimson Sees Nazi Gamble Could Shorten War
War Secretary Stimson said the German counteroffensive might shorten World War II if it fails. He noted Germans penetrated Allied lines five to twenty miles and built a substantial force on the Westwall. He praised General Eisenhower and warned the enemy aims to halt the Cologne plain and Saar basin, recalling World War I battles and the quick breakthrough that led to surrender.
