Early Balloting On Amendments Unusually Light

Birmingham voters showed unusually light turnout for a statewide election with 25 constitutional amendments on the ballot including one with racial overtones. By 11 a.m. only a handful voted in Birmingham and similar patterns appeared across most counties despite good weather. The focus was on Amendment No 18 proposing Macon County’s abolition and on bonds for various improvements.

Light turnout for 25 Alabama constitution amendments in Decatur

A spot check at four downtown Decatur boxes at noon showed a light vote with 66 ballots cast by mid day. In Morgan County City Hall 12 absentee ballots led with 26 total, while Courthouse 15 Library 14 and American Legion 11 each reported small totals. Athens also reported light morning turnout with 89 votes cast at eight polling places by 11 a.m. Polls open until 6 p.m.

Hungry Thieves Hit Four Morgan County Groceries

A series of four grocery store burglaries in Morgan County last week netted items including oysters tuna sardines margarine bacon flour bologna canned milk peaches pork and beans and four glasses of snuff and cigarettes. Hale’s store reported $45 to $50 missing from an open register while no other cash losses were noted.

Negroes Held For Beating Madison Man

Two Black men were being held in Madison County jail in Alabama awaiting charges in the Sunday night beating of R. O. Hembree a 64 year old Madison banker. Hembree said the assailants attacked him after a pickup truck collided with his car on Highway 20. He suffered facial cuts and bruises. The sheriff said charges had not yet been filed late this morning.

Atlas ICBM first success reported by Air Force

The Air Force launched an Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile from Cape Canaveral at 12 38 p m EST. The limited range test covered several hundred miles landing in a pre selected target area. The weapon weighed 100 tons and could reach 5000 miles in 30 minutes.
