Mostly cloudy with light rain in the far south tonight and Sunday. Northeast winds on the coast, warmer Sunday afternoon. Local ROTC officers announce new initiates from the University. Residents return home for Christmas as holiday travel and postal backlogs loom. Packages bottlenecked at post offices and freight cars amid war shipment delays. postmasters vow to speed Christmas mail once embargo lifts.
The three day railroad strike that peaked during the Christmas rush ended in Chicago with no wage settlement. Under pressure from President Truman federal courts and union officials more than 10000 yard workers ended the transportation tie up. The Post Office canceled embargo restrictions on Christmas parcels and mail moved immediately along the chain.
The brick building on First Avenue, known as the old Decatur Iron and Steel Co. site, formerly owned by S. G. McDuff and operated as a cotton warehouse, has been sold to John B. Sewell of Trinity. McDuff will continue operating the McDuff Bonded Warehouse there.
At noon Saturday Postmaster Robert Sheppard announced an order from the Postmaster General lifting all mail service restrictions. The December 14, 1950 embargo tied to railroad switchings is rescinded and normal service resumes immediately.
Distress clause milk price increases announced by distributors affect seven Alabama cities including Tuscaloosa. Prices rise from 22 to 23 cents in Tuscaloosa, 23 to 24 in Birmingham and Mobile, 22 to 23 in Montgomery Anniston and Gadsden, and 21 to 22 in Opelika.
