A faction of northern Democrats pushes substitutes for the wage hour bill aiming at strict interstate standards. They oppose administration control and contend southern support hinges on wage differentials, while leaders anticipate a late week vote with possible minimal changes.
Sterchi Bros. Stores Inc will distribute 250000 in cash dividends this year payable December 22. The board declared 76c per share on 6 percent cumulative first preferred stock for Q4 and 25c per share on 6 percent non cumulative second preferred stock for Q4. A special 50c per share dividend was declared on the no par common stock. Net sales for 11 months reached 5324207, up from 4816482 last year, a 10.54 percent rise. The firm operates 38 furniture stores in seven southern states.
The census bureau reports November cotton consumption at 484,819 bales of lint and 57,565 linters, down from October. Stocks on Nov 30 total 1.68 million lint and 287k linters in consuming establishments, plus 11.55 million lint and 64k linters in public storage. Imports reach 9,115 bales. exports 798,921. Spindle activity in November sits at 22,791,550.
Members of The Dealers Cooperative representing North Alabama communities met at the Tennessee Valley Hotel to map appliance sales campaigns for the coming year. The 10 am meeting was led by J. S. Sutherland of Alabama Power, with R. E. Howard and C. W. Kenyon in attendance. Representatives from Decatur, Hartselle, Sheffield, Russellville, Haleyville, Moulton, Town Creek, and Courtland attended, about 30 people present.
December reports describe shooting looting and sabotage across Palestine with an armed band killing a Jewish constable in Tiberias wounding a British policeman in Haifa and exchanges of fire with troops. Marauders raid Jenin district homes and valuables are seized while communications lines face attacks by rioters.
A youth described as one of the calmest killers shot and killed Mrs. Wilma V. Carpenter in her Camp Hill home. He bound Mary Griffin, 22, tied her hands, then attacked her. Griffin escaped as the assailant cleansed her wounds with antiseptic before leaving. Frederick R. Kingman, the deceased’s fiancé, rushed to Philadelphia after learning of her death.
A wagon driven by W. N. Norwood on the Moulton highway was struck by a Chevrolet about 10 40 this morning. The front end and coupling pin were damaged. Mrs. Byars and R M Byars were in the car but escaped with minor scratches. Norwood was unharmed.
The Associated Press reports mild conditions in the South with sunshine while cold, treacherous weather persisted across the nation. Snow and sleet hit Virginia and the Rockies as traffic mishaps increased. Five deaths and widespread property damage were noted, with miners and students missing work and school in southwestern counties. Weather varied by region with low temperatures in Montana and New York and a potential flood threat near California levees. Hog killing on North Alabama farms halted amid shifting forecasts.
The Union and Oak Ridge delegations urged repairs to two roads in District 2 during the board of revenue session. Both groups received hearings on the requests amid routine agenda items.

Shanghai reports describe great fires in Nanking as Japanese forces press their advance into China. Fragmentary leaks suggest heavy fighting ended inside Nanking walls while troops push further afield amid fears for residents. Japanese spokesmen claim no information due to severed communications.
Captain Donald T. Wright of St. Louis told the House rivers and harbors committee that TVA fitted Tennessee river to inland water standards but many boats on Mississippi and Ohio rivers cannot use TVA locks. He described TVA locks as small and warned against removing waterways from Army engineers jurisdiction.
Prosecuting Attorney Fred A. Denham sought testimony to support a convicted order for janitor supplies totaling about ten thousand dollars over four years and gifts to Ed F. McDonald. I L Ziebart testified he got 9 780 in state warrants 1932 36 though less than 1500 dollars worth of merchandise went to the capitol. McDonald, former secretary of state, failed to secure a jury verdict in the prior trial and left office in January after three terms. He ran second in the 1936 Democratic gubernatorial primary.
Garland Leonard a Pentacostal missionary from Yale Iowa was killed by Chinese soldiers at Yuanpink in north Shansi province on October 7 according to reports. His wife Mrs Leonard was reported safe at Taiyuanfu via the British Baptist Hospital and Japanese Domes news agency.
The circuit court equity docket will be called into session Wednesday morning by Judge W W Callahan. The civil docket non jury term concludes today on the second day of the session.
Works Progress Administrators from 11 Southern states meet in New Orleans to set increased relief employment quotas for their states.
Admiral Harry Yarnell of the Asiatic Fleet stated US gunboats will remain in Chinese waters to protect nationals as fighting continues near Nanking. He rejected a proposed withdrawal and said the gunboat Oahu will bring Panay bombing survivors to Shanghai before returning to the Yangtze station.
J Edgar Hoover announced the arrest of Woodrow Wilson Price of Independence Missouri in Kansas City on charges of shooting Special Agent Henry A Snow and attempting extortion. Price allegedly mailed a $600 extortion letter to Howard B Jacobs on December 3 and wounded Snow three days later during an escape from a six man trap at Independence. Snow is recovering from shotgun wounds. Price faces up to 30 years in prison and $15000 in fines.
Kansas City police arrested 21 pickets at the Ford assembly plant as the United Auto Workers strike continued. Police said 49 had been arrested Friday and that all pickets would be arrested as no strike was in progress. Plant workmen entered as managers reported plans on schedule.
The Panay bombing death toll rose to four as a badly burned unidentified seaman was found aboard a U S gunboat. Refugees amid ongoing clashes between Japanese and Chinese troops around Hohsien hinder rescue efforts by Oahu and Bee at the Yangtze mouth.
The Tennessee river fell to 20.9 feet as the day’s high reached 55 degrees and the low dropped to 38. No rainfall occurred in Alabama and extreme northwest Florida. Skies were fair to partly cloudy tonight through Wednesday with little temperature change and moderate easterly winds along the coast. Tennessee remains mostly cloudy with possible rain in the north and extreme west portions.
