Decatur woke to a mantle of white as sleet turned to snow and roofs were blanketed. Light snowfall produced churned streets and slippery driving while rainfall remained off freezing. More snow was forecast and extreme cold was anticipated in the coming days.
A northern Alabama storm coated Huntsville and Decatur with over an inch of snow while central areas saw mixed precipitation of rain sleet and snow. Birmingham and Tuscaloosa experienced sleet transitions to rain, and Montgomery recorded about one inch of precipitation with a low near 36 degrees.
A Gulf of Mexico disturbance described as of considerable intensity moved along the Louisiana Mississippi coast during the night and centered off the northwest Florida coast. It brought cooler temperatures and heavy rains from Port Arthur Texas to Apalachicola Florida with winds up to 38 mph in Mobile and 22 mph in New Orleans. The Weather Bureau ordered storm warnings lowered and northwest warnings raised as the system moved east northeast toward the Atlantic.
In London the 28 year old Lord De Clifford was found not guilty by the peers of England after a six hour trial transitioning felony charges from the common courts to the house of Lords. The audience heard arguments on criminal negligence and defense attorney Hailsham led the case for acquittal. Meanwhile in Minneapolis federal and state investigations into crime and the killing of editor Walter Liggett intensified.
Elmer Loyd owner of Loyd's Drug Store on Second Avenue and Moulton Street reports a burglary attempt. A small iron bolt shattered a plate glass window but failed to reach any display items. Nightwatchman Parker observed the damage during his rounds around 1 a.m. and again 20 minutes later when he found the broken window.
Members of Decatur V People's Union will meet at 7 30 Friday night at Ninth Street Methodist Church. Officers were paid today. An appropriate Christmas program has been arranged and all members were asked to attend.
Funeral services were held in Belle Mina for Mrs. Margaret R. Bradley 67 who died Wednesday at a local hospital after a long illness. The Rev. L. D Patterson officiated with burial led by Rev. Bentley Brown and others. The procession departed Brown Funeral Parlors at 1 30 p m. Mrs. Bradley was widely known in Limestone and Morgan counties and is survived by three daughters three sons four brothers and two sisters.
The head of a dog owned by Mrs. R. L. Stewart in the eastern city section showed rabies signs at Tennessee Valley Lab. The animal, killed by Mrs. Stewart’s son after it reportedly bit several other dogs, prompted the issuing of anti rabies vaccines to Stewart family members this afternoon.
Edith Maxwell, 21, schoolteacher sentenced to 25 years for her father’s murder, had a new trial denied by Judge H. A. N. Skeen after over three hours of argument. Maxwell wept as the decision was announced and stood in court with her brother Earl after arriving from jail.
Walton Hutchison 22 and his fiancee Gladys Hicks 27 vanished September 8. Their skeletons were found with a rusted 32 caliber revolver nearby. Police theorize the elopement failed and triggered the double tragedy as the missing automobile remains sought.
Funeral services were conducted for D W Thomas 75 of Lacon Route 1 who died December 5 at home. Rev John Baily led the rites with burial at Higdon cemetery near Lacon. Survived by widow 10 children and 31 grandchildren. Active pallbearers listed with several names.
Senator Means of Charleston accused Governor Olin D Johnston and a group of advisers of running a criminal style ring over the South Carolina highway department. He named John P Grace J C Long and Rep Ben Adams as key figures and alleged attempts to seize highway control to protect oil investments. He urged a statement from the governor amid a legal battle over troop control and highway funds.
Decatur residents will welcome a new grocery option at 622 Bank Street opposite the Lyons Hotel when Trimble and Taylor cash store opens Friday. Claude Trimble and Jimmy Taylor bring grocery and meat experience to a modern market with ice box equipment and a delivery service for customers.
The Tennessee river gauge at 3.6 feet reports a 54 degree high and 33 degree low over 24 hours with 0.16 inches of snow. Alabama forecasts cloudy conditions on the coast with rain or snow in the northeast and north central areas and near freezing temperatures in the south tonight. Friday expects partly cloudy skies and rising temperatures with strong coastal winds easing tonight. Tennessee stays mostly cloudy with rain in the east and central portions, followed by generally fair and slightly warmer weather Friday after northeast rain.
Firemen race to Railroad Street after a fire is spotted in snow lit scene. A man stands by an iron pot, declaring he plans to boil water to scald white folk as firefighters look on in stunned disbelief.
Mrs Etoile Pardue Armstrong a 20 year old bride four months wed lay critical with skull fracture after a brutal assault in her Rocky Ridge home. Henry L Armstrong her husband and O J Pardue 16 a cousin were home when they found her unconscious with a pool of blood. Deputies searched for a suspect and checked a possible burglary lead.
Rosa Davidson died at her Madison route 3 home after a weeklong illness of pneumonia. Funeral services will be held at Valhermosa Saturday morning with burial by Brown of Decatur at Valdermosa cemetery. Survived by husband Henry, five daughters Ella Mary Martha Bessie Elna and son Ollie.
Jackson county grand jury served capitulations against a group of defendants yesterday in Jefferson county jail. Arraignment is scheduled for next Monday and trials are set for January 6.
Census data show 22 342 bales of cotton ginned in Morgan County for the 1935 crop by December 1, compared with 25 131 bales for the 1934 crop by December 1. The figures highlight a drop in ginning activity year over year.

Washington December 12 Attorney General Cummings asked a federal court for practical and legal reasons to delay action on constitutional challenges to the new deal utility law by seven holding companies He appeared before the District of Columbia supreme court as chief law officer of the government He argued that ongoing actions by the attorney general the postmaster general and the securities and exchange commission make further litigation unnecessary pending a supreme court adjudication He noted that none of the seven companies faces any threatened action by government officials and urged a stay in the suits until the Electric Bond and Share case is decided He added that other courts are denying similar delays as utilities mount injunctions in many jurisdictions The week saw a lull after the cotton control act defense collapsed and Reed failed to resume argument in another closely watched case
