Athens Electric To Get Hike
The Athens city council voted to pass a 16.2 percent electric rate increase to consumers, effective January 2, due to rising TVA charges. Mayor Bobby Higgins and Charlie Robinson said absorbing any more costs is impossible, with the hike causing about $3 more per month per customer. The council also accepted an $8,980 federal grant for Pryor Field Airport master planning, tabled action on lowering the city delivery license fee, and approved a low bid of $373 per unit for seven eight cubic yard front loading refuse containers.
