Pentecostal Revival Gains Ground in Brazil's Faith Scene
In Sao Paulo a Pentecostal revival expands across large halls and a planned 25 000 seat temple in Pompeia opening in 1975. Brazil for Christ joins Assemblies of God and Brazil Christian Congregation as major groups led by Manuel de Mello. The movement spreads from Recife to the south with dramatic growth and beliefs in divine healing speaking in tongues and miraculous cures. It now accounts for about 2 million Pentecostals, roughly 60 percent of Brazil's Protestant population.
