Milk Price Hike Approved by Alabama Dairy Board
A five to two board vote after a full day closed session raises the minimum half gallon milk price to 60 cents starting next Sunday. Producers and distributors hold a majority on the seven member board with two consumer seats and the agriculture commissioner. Critics warn prices could reach 65 to 70 cents without a reinstated price ceiling. Governor Brewer says he is shocked and will review options. Alabama dairy prices have traditionally been above other Southeast markets except Florida.
