Johnson faces pivotal choice on civil rights bill
A Louis Harris survey shows strong nationwide support for Kennedy civil rights legislation with 64 percent backing and 68 percent for a public accommodations law, but regional split remains. The South opposes the public accommodations section by over 2 to 1 while the North favors it by nearly 4 to 1. Johnson must win Southern votes to preserve his base while pursuing federal civil rights reforms.

Army orders pending, expected similar.
