Cavern-caused cave ins hit Athens business district
In Athens a series of underground cavern collapses struck areas near Clinton and Hobbs Streets and the First Baptist Church. A 4,000 gallon gas tank at a Sinclair station may have dropped earth away as a tanker pumped, with church renovations and nearby auto parts and bus facilities affected. Officials cite dried springs and test drilling for caverns as the cause and warn of further risk while plans for a library and a college dormitory face site concerns.
