Decatur Gadsden Hamilton Florence and Huntsville districts posted an O record with no accidents injuries or fatalities for the period. Five city court cases covered minor charges such as parking violations and red light violations.

Fire Captain Shot by Husband in City

Fire Department Captain Claude Binford was shot and seriously wounded by a husband who found Binford with his wife. Police Capt. Willie Ware said W. O. Thompson, service station and taxi company operator, fired on Binford and was held on an assault with intent to murder charge pending outcome of Binford's wounds.

John B. Sewell Named Director at MCN Bank

John B. Sewell of Trinity was elected a director of The Morgan County National Bank of Decatur, succeeding the late E. W. Strother. Sewell, active in farming and cotton gin operation in Trinity, has long been part of the area’s agricultural and business life. His great grandfather James Fennel helped organize the old State Bank of Alabama in 1832.

Arab Telephone Co to Expand Service Across Four Counties

Rural Electrification Administration approves a $263 000 loan to Arab Telephone Co to extend service to Morgan Cullman Marshall and Blount counties. McDonald predicts 1500 customers by cutover with 200 miles of new lines and a new $22 000 building and $50 000 central office equipment. Construction could finish by June next year if weather cooperates.

Eisenhower rounds out budget with top aides at Camp David

President Eisenhower met with his top advisers at Camp David for an intensive session to complete next year’s defense program while balancing the budget and exploring a possible tax cut. Secretary Humphrey said the aim is to balance the budget, with a potential tax cut noted for the State of the Union.

Navy Patrol Plane Down Seven Missing

A two-engine Navy patrol bomber crashed at sea during maneuvers near Kauai east of Oahu. Three of the 10 aboard were rescued by a submarine. Seven submarines and four planes searched the flare-lit ocean for the seven missing airmen. Survivors identified by the Navy include Lt. K. C. Guedel pilot Lt. (j.g.) E. J. O'Malley co pilot and Lt. (j.g.) Robert S. Smith navigator. Another P2V reported the crash.

City Schools Buy Property For Forty Thousand Dollars

Decatur City Schools paid 38 000 for five lots with three main houses and a smaller dwelling. They will use space as an additional high school wing to handle at least 500 more students and preserve playground space. Two more lots with two houses are under agreement and possession of two houses is already taken. The full property transfer is expected by February 1.

Giant New Plane Crashes In Bay

A Martin SeaMaster giant jet seaplane crashes in Chesapeake Bay area southeast of Washington during a test flight from Balti more. Four aboard. one body recovered. Witnesses saw heavy smoke and a parachute open as the craft exploded after takeoff. Further recovery and study await explanation of the crash.

U S Cuts Back Cotton Estimate

The Agriculture Department final year report lowers the cotton crop estimate to 14.663 million bales of 500 pounds. 180000 bales below last month’s forecast, with Georgia and Alabama contributing noted harvest figures.

United Fund To Get Started In Morgan County

The Morgan County United Fund will hold its first membership meeting Friday at two pm in the city auditorium. Any person able to contribute at least $1 is a member and invited to attend. Business will cover constitution by laws incorporation of the fund election of directors and officers and appointment of an executive committee. The fund already raised 96265.70 toward a county goal of 94800 to aid 18 agencies.

Official tabulations from Moulton and Decatur show Lawrence voting 778 to 455 against Amendment 20 while Morgan records 2,483 opposed to 1,801 in support. Amendment No. 1 loses in Lawrence 1,575 to 1,054 and in Morgan 4,620 to 2,071.

Judge T C Almon did not issue a ruling today in the armed robbery cases of three youths Sherel Holloway 15 Arab Harold Smith 15 Joppa and Larry Adams 16 Union Hill. Evidence was presented yesterday to determine guilt or innocence with decision promised in a few days. Noble Russell represented the defendants as deputies from Sheriff Jimmie Collier had earlier brought the trio from Texas.
