Sunday forecast calls for partial clouds with showers in the northwest and gentle easterly winds along the coast. Local items note visitors to Judge T. C. Almon in Macon, clinic dismissals at Hamil, hospitalizations at Decatur General, and Christmas mail advisories as post office facilities warn of slower service.
Decatur and Morgan county residents will see holiday lights begin Tuesday along main streets. The Salvation Army Junior Chamber of Commerce and VFW will sponsor two Christmas trees and a toy shop plus delivering checks and baskets to families. One tree will be at the Salvation Army Hall 1331 Fourth Avenue S and the other at the People's Church. Santa will greet children at each tree while parents visit the toy shop.
Funeral services for Ellen Groenendyke 88 retired missionary were held at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Born June 26 1859 in Indiana she came to Decatur as a girl and sailed for Africa in 1889 as a United Brethren missionary later living in Decatur the last 40 years. Survived by brother Benton Groenendyke a great niece Mrs Nadine Masterson and Dr Frank Edwards Pallbearers were Westminster officers.
The Landers trio aged 10 8 and 6 live with relatives after their father a former Mobile taxi driver fell ill. They pick cotton on the Wilder farm as they await aid while the Kennedy Veterans Hospital in Memphis offers no federal help. An application at the public welfare department is pending and the Salvation Army has given five dollars and plans more Christmas aid.
Mrs. R A Miller 44 faces seven warrants sworn by Ola Harp in Morgan county accusing her of writing checks on First National Bank of Dothan without funds totaling about 1700 dollars. Harp and husband were hired to gather directory data for Miller and Associates in several towns.
U S secret service says the largest counterfeit money ring here since 1934 has been broken with the arrest of 38 year old Iana Moschiano and four others. About $600000 in fake currency printed since July. Co defendants include John Brennan Minas Aretos Peter Klikas and Vito D Agostino.
Mrs. A. J. Garner sues Bertha Garner for 1000 dollars claiming assault and battery last July 15. She alleges beating on the face bruising the right forearm striking the kidney area and a kick to the back. J. N. Powell represents the plaintiff.
The foreign aid bill totaling 590 million dollars for France Italy Austria and China moves toward crucial House votes paired with inflation debate. Republicans seek cunning plan to restrain price rises while House Foreign Affairs Committee prepares amendments preceding final passage likely Tuesday.
Carl Slatton, sentenced to 30 years for the fatal shooting of Marion Ward, will not appeal the case. Defense attorneys Noble Russell and Russell Lynn announced withdrawal of the appeal after Judge Newton Powell imposed the sentence following a two day Morgan county trial. Slatton, 25, surrendered after Ward was killed October 4 outside the City case on Second Avenue. The state argued for life. defense contended no malice.
The Associated Press reports communal violence in the Holy Land as Arab and Jewish factions clash across Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Arabia. At least 146 killed or wounded, with Haifa fires and Tel Aviv clashes. Hagana and Irgun blamed. Arab radio threatens further action. Casualties include Arabs and Jews, with property losses reaching about 4 million dollars.
Governor James E. Folsome will speak in Decatur Friday afternoon at four, part of a day that includes stops in Cullman at ten AM Hartselle at one PM Decatur at four and Athens at seven PM. The schedule lists four Alabama towns for the engagement.
In Athens Alabama the county grand jury adjourned after a week, returning 36 indictments from 42 investigated cases. They condemned rising violence, urged harsher penalties for concealed weapons, and commended investigator R A Troupe for his work. They did not indict John Usery in a rape case against Lila Bradford.
Some 3000 production workers at Oak Ridge gaseous diffusion plant threaten a strike after five hours of talks failed to reach a new contract. The union seeks a 25 cent hourly raise, certified by the NLRB as bargaining agent for plant workers. Local 288 voted to strike if no agreement is signed. A strike would disrupt production of atomic bomb ingredients.
The United Jewish Appeal in Decatur is short of its 6000 goal by a little over 1000. Harold Michelson, chairman, said 4975 has been contributed locally including 3000 from ten Jewish families. Letters were sent to about 150 residents and institutions seeking support to raise the remaining 3000. The national quota is 170 million.
A crowd of St Bernard college students picketed the Cullman theatre this week against the film Forever Amber. The lay Catholic society condemned the movie. protesters marched daily Monday through Thursday with banners but allowed entry. Managers reported no business impact and did not protest the action.
Circuit Judge Wal ter B. Jones issued a writ prohibiting State Finance Director W H Drinkard from reopening the 5 516 000 REA loan case for a new hearing. The action follows claims of irregularities in evidence and overruling by John P Shaffer. A hearing on Drinkard authority is set for Tuesday.
Decatur public stood ready as the stadium fund reached 84 750 dollars after selling 847 of 1000 reserved seats at 100 dollars each. Campaign chair J E McClary announced that only 153 tickets remain before the goal of 100000 dollars for the new high school stadium is reached. Architect E B Van Buren will present plans to the school board by December 15 after which bids may be sought and a contract could be let early next year. Tickets remain at The Decatur Daily office and are valid for ten years for any athletic event in the stadium.
Marvin Harold, 25, trolley driver, claimed a car driver accused him of cutting in. The motorist followed to the end of the line, drew a revolver, threatened to shoot, then kicked Harold and escaped. Harold was taken to a hospital to report the incident.
