Decatur police and Huntsville authorities pursue a blue 1949 Chevrolet sedan stolen in Huntsville Saturday night. Seven city court docket items include multiple traffic and disorderly conduct charges.
Police are looking for a thief who took five outboard motors worth 1600 from the Decatur boat harbor Saturday night. Motors include 10 hp Johnson owned by Howard Clark, 7.5 hp Elgin owned by Jerry Comer, 7 hp Corsair owned by Charlie Minton, 25 hp Evinrude owned by Fred Hunt, and 40 hp Mercury owned by Grady Dumas. Harbor official found them missing Sunday morning. Lt. Pack Self and Sgt. J. T. Broadrick investigated.

Senator Langer pressed for a public investigation into whether Dixon Yates backers financed President Eisenhower's 1952 campaign. He asked the Senate Antimonopoly subcommittee to subpoena Postmaster General Summerfield, Sherman Adams, Stephen Mitchell, and others amid a probe into a "criminal side" of Dixon Yates contract negotiations for TVA power.
President Eisenhower and British Prime Minister Anthony Eden prepare to meet January 30 to push closer cooperation in the Middle East. They will review Western relations with Russia after recent high level visits. Eden offers to mediate the Middle East dispute and suggests using the 1947 UN partition plan as a talks starting point.
A Soviet Army lieutenant in full uniform fled to West Berlin and asked the United States for political asylum. The Army identified him as Ivan Vacelevich Ovchinnikov, 26, first lieutenant. He arrived on the city elevated train. A new UN Security Council vote failed to break the Philippines Yugoslavia deadlock after balloting.
President Eisenhower and top defense and budget advisers reached a near final accord on 1956-57 defense spending around 34 1 2 billion dollars annually. The deal likely ends prospects for a substantial tax cut when Congress reconvenes. Secretary Wilson said no final figure was set for next year's defense budget after the hour and a half meeting with the President.
Secretary of Labor Mitchell urged organized labor to speak up in political matters. Speaking at the New York convention of the AFL CIO the 16 million member group, he said labor has a duty to be vocal in politics.
Police in Texas and New Mexico seek 4 year old Mary Jean Nance missing from Longview Texas. Sheriff Noble Crawford says Dr Frank Samburg telephoned the child’s grandfather warning of never seeing her again if kidnapping charges against the doctor aren’t dropped. The doctor, under arrest in Ithaca New York for kidnapping his own son, disappeared with both children after a court order in Longview last Friday.
Voters in Decatur and Morgan County showed a slow morning turnout for a slate of 30 measures led by the Goodwyn amendment. By 11 a.m. only 213 ballots were cast across eight of 19 boxes in Decatur with low withering totals at several polling sites and rural areas described as mighty light.
County education chief Lester Wooten says Morgan County schools end the year December 16 or December 23 and resume January 2. Some districts had four weeks off for cotton picking but will make up one week. others take two weeks of Christmas recess with a later finish in June.
Britons believe Nikita Khrushchev is inviting provocation to force Britain to cancel his London visit planned for April after Geneva talks. Analysts and diplomats question whether the aim is to discredit the West by provoking a cancellation.
The British Foreign Office disclosed that Britain has conceded the right of the East German Communist government to control inland waterways feeding Berlin. The move follows a Russian request and aims to gain recognition of East Germany’s sovereignty. American and French headquarters offered no immediate comment on the stance.
Herbert Johnson 60 president of the Schulenburg NAACP chapter and commander of the Schulenburg Negro American Legion Post was found dead at his farm twenty miles west of Schulenburg. Sheriff L O McGinty said Johnson was beaten and burned with his automobile and that no motive could yet be established.
Knoxville Tenn. Appointment of Chief Budget Officer Louis J. Van Mol and Personnel Director Harry L. Case as assistant general managers of the Tennessee Valley Authority was announced today. They will keep their former duties and assume new general administrative responsibilities.
Secretary of State Dulles accused Soviet Premier Bulganin and Khrushchev of stirring hatred against the West during their Asia visit. He said their remarks encouraged force by India against the Portuguese colony of See DULLES on Page 2.
In Summit County Ohio five teen age girls were bound to the grand jury by Juvenile Court Judge Russell W Thomas over the objections of a weeping stepmother. The girls including Mira Cain aged 15 face first degree murder charges and could be tried as adults with potential death penalties unless mercy is recommended by a jury. The judge removed the hysterical stepmother from court and explained the grand jury route would allow adult trials.
Jan Warrick a Redstone Arsenal employee and Decatur resident teams with Mrs Evelyn Bryan to pilot a modified Piper Tri Pacer from Jefferson City Tennessee to Georgetown British Guiana to deliver a Southern Baptist Mission plane and to shop in Caribbean free ports En route they plan to reach Georgetown by December 7 to 9 before returning by air via Miami Florida The flight aims to reach mission work in Brazil and test the midget aircraft's nine hour range and 66 gallon fuel capacity with stops in the Caribbean for currency advantages.
Voters statewide debated 30 amendments including the Goodwyn income tax for schools and an 110 million dollar school bond issue as polls opened across Alabama. Early turnout in Jefferson County was moderate with rural polls closing later than city polling sites.
In Asahikawa Japan a sharp temperature drop caused rice wine to freeze and burst in town. Residents reported damage to containers and property as authorities investigated the incident.
