Auburn Strain Leghorns Show Low Mortality in Tests

Tests at Sand Mountain Substation show the Auburn strain of white leghorns, developed by the API Agricultural Experiment Station, twice as disease resistant as a leading Pennsylvania strain. Of 600 chicks started February 21, 1950, 46 died in 160 days, none in the next 61 days, while Pennsylvania birds suffered 75 deaths in 160 days and 21 more in the following two months. Mortality was highest early for the Auburn birds, with 32 deaths in 37 days, and 14 more later. Pennsylvania losses were 45 in the early period and 51 later. Over 221 days Auburn losses were under 8 percent versus 16 percent for Pennsylvania. Mortality at maturity was costly to poultrymen, but the Auburn strain showed strong survival.

Plenty Of Peanuts G D Peel Targets A Ton Per Acre

G D Peel of Louisville Route 1, a peanut farmer, aims for a ton per acre and nears the goal as neighbors rumor magic. Last year he averaged 1844 pounds on 90 acres and hit a ton on a 17 acre field, insisting proper planting, fertilizing, cultivating and dusting yield the results. Trials at Sand Mountain Substation and Auburn Main Station show similar outcomes with disease resistance and low adult mortality in the Auburn strain.
