Armada Arms for Europe Move Soon After Paris Pact
An armada of freighters loaded with up to $1,000,000,000 of arms will depart American shores for Europe in a few weeks. The signal came as defense ministers and chiefs of staff from 12 Atlantic pact nations opened a master defense plan in Paris. The shipments require presidential certification and further nation to nation agreements, but the plan is largely American in origin. The aim is to deter aggression, notably from Russia. In Italy, a 24 hour general strike showed a weak Communist mobilization, with much of the country idle and conservatives calling the effort a flop. In Yugoslavia, a Russian spy case unfolds in Sarajevo as a Russian Orthodox priest pleads partially guilty, while efforts to expose the Cominform underground continue. In Bonn, Kurt Schumacher will be allowed back into parliament after patched differences with Adenauer.
