City police report a fake check passed at Patterson's clothing store on Bank St about 4 p.m. Friday. The check for 72.01 used the name Albert Ruff, described as six feet tall, about 215 pounds with blond hair.
The federal Housing Administrator recertified Decatur's slum clearance program for a second year. The 47 acre urban renewal project near Church St and Eighth Ave aims to clear blight, create right of way for a bridge approach, and redevelop land for light industry and business. Net project cost is about 370000 with a 247000 federal grant covering roughly two thirds and the city supplying the rest.
Decatur and surrounding areas reeled under a 22 degree low as long coats and anti freeze became essentials. Stations reported a surge in antifreeze sales and auto checks with 50 percent of vehicles stopped since the cold front arrived. The U S Weather Bureau warned motorists to shield radiators and pipes while forecasters called for sunny but frigid conditions today. Wind had eased to 15 to 20 mph after yesterday’s gusts.
The Morgan County board of education approved a resolution to study selling bonds to fund school expansion at Union Hill and Hartselle. R C McWhorter and John Lyle were re elected chair and vice chair. Trustees seek a cafeteria and four classrooms at Union Hill as both districts approved 5 12 mill 30 year ad valorem taxes for construction. Wooten to meet with trustees and officials next week.
Simone Silva, the red haired film actress who caused a Cannes near riot in 1954 by stripping to pose with Robert Mitchum, was found dead in her London apartment at 29. Indications point to natural death. a friend said she was recently hospitalized with a kidney ailment.
A four room frame house about three miles north of Hartselle on Highway 31 burned shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday. No one was hurt. The Johnson family lost most furniture and possessions. The house owner Frank Ellenburg had partial insurance. A passerby spotted the blaze and alerted the area fire department, but water supply ran low before a second truck arrived.

Miguel F. Pereira, 48, of Portuguese descent, was stabbed by a sailfish’s sword-like bill off Cape San Lazaro Baja California while tuna fishing on the Sun Glow out of San Diego. The fish pierced his right buttock, passed under his spine, and exited his left buttock as it escaped. He was flown to San Diego for treatment.
Rice Navy Mississippi Texas Tennessee Texas A M plus Oklahoma Duke Ohio State Oregon were chosen for the six post season bowls. Orange Bowl matched Oklahoma Duke, Rose Bowl pitted Ohio State Oregon, Cotton Bowl had Rice Navy, Sugar Bowl paired Mississippi Texas, and Gator Bowl set Tennessee Texas A M with games mostly on New Year's Day.
Decatur merchants reported strong early holiday sales the day after Thanksgiving with Friday activity generally ahead of last year. Cold winds cut Saturday shoppers short, but most said Friday was very good and Saturday would likely match or exceed it if not for the weather.

In Birmingham on November 30 a 16 year old Negro boy died after a sharp object wounded him 19 times in the chest and back. George Sims Crews was found by police in a truck bed under a downtown viaduct. The death occurred about 6 30 pm after a contest.

The defense network would supplement radar overhauls as planners adapt overseas systems. Boeing builds the Bomarc with 300 mile range and self-guiding warhead options.
