Shanghai experiences a cholera outbreak in the French concession affecting many Americans. United States authorities seal the Port of Shanghai to civilian ships, marooning about 2,000 Americans. An unidentified bomber struck the Lung Shan, a refugee ship, while Japanese forces launch a new offensive 12 miles north of Shanghai.
U S authorities closed Shanghai port to all but naval ships amid naval risks and a new air attack on a refugee laden vessel. The Yangtze region remains under threat as Woosung and surrounding areas come under heavy bombardment with hundreds reported dead and wounded.
Reports describe strategic gains at Woosung including its railway station and forts as cholera spreads. The U S Navy halts shore leaves and orders Chinese crew from the Augusta while Japanese forces bombard the Shanghai waterway near Woosun, amid mass casualties and looting.
In Decatur the city plans to review 12 well located school buildings serving students in every part of the city as part of a broader facilities assessment. Officials emphasize maximizing access and efficiency across neighborhoods.
Joseph Jacobs, long-time friend of the Mack family, confessed to killing Evelyn Mack 10 by crushing her skull with an automobile crank after asking her mother for permission to take her to a grocery. He fled toward Canada, was stopped at the Ambassador Bridge, and told officers he acted after a period of irrational behavior following his daughter’s death eight years earlier.
Shanghai reports the undeclared Sino Japanese struggle has yielded only 24 Chinese prisoners and 20 Japanese since hostilities began about two months ago. A Greyhound bus and a sedan collided five miles north of Goshen Indiana, killing seven people including A G Carpenter of Iowa City James Kelleher of Albany New York and Raymond J Buskin of St Louis. Twenty were injured and at least 15 others were to be moved to nearby cities. Witnesses said the sedan entered Route 20 and 15 and struck the bus causing it to overturn.
Preparations proceed to file suit to enjoin Tennessee September 23 referendum on dry laws. An unnamed attorney says taxpayers group backs the move. Estimated referendum cost ranges from 40000 to 50000 dollars. repealists and prohibitionists note the result would be nonbinding public sentiment.
In Moulton Lawrence circuit court Bert Retherford testified that Deputy Sheriff Andrew Dutton fired first in the Owens Chapel pistol battle last June. The defense ended its direct case as crowds filled the courtroom, with state rebuttal set to counter the claim. Glenn Whisenant, indicted with Retherford, faces the jury as witnesses, including those wounded in the shooting, testified about the incident and its victims.
Seven year old Bettie Jane Baker daughter of Mr and Mrs Guy M Baker of Eva Route one died at home after a five week typhoid illness. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at Lawrence's Cove with Rev Romer Williams officiating and interment to follow. Survived by parents three sisters and three brothers.
Pittsburgh August report notes National Electric Products Co. ordered workers to join a union under threat of dismissal. The C I C affiliated United Brotherhood of Electricians and Radio Workers challenged the action citing labor board jurisdiction. The IBEW claimed a closed shop contract. John L Lewis union disputed that contract to the labor board.
Testimony at a national labor board hearing described the formation of the Etowah rubber workers organization on Goodyear property after dissolution of the old employee representation plan. Rex Norton testified the group met on the Goodyear golf course with 30 to 35 men and that Bernie Beck urged action to prevent CIO influence.

In Tifton Georgia August 31 contending booers prepared to challenge a temporary restraining order against booing of commercial ads in movie programs. The suit, by theater manager R E B Main, also targets the Tifton Gazette for printing an ad urging booing, with claims of damages of 10 000.

Congressman Sam Hobbs of Alabama urges Henry Wallace to revise the 65 percent subsidy plan. He argues subsidies must cover the entire cotton crop, not just 65 percent of basic production, to protect farmers as cotton prices fall. He defines basic production as the five year average 1928 to 1932.
A man pled guilty to bigamy and received eight years in the penitentiary after a judge accepted that the state’s case relied on circumstantial evidence. Woody Greenwood was recovering at Benevolent Society Hospital from knife wounds suffered in an altercation with Floyd Bay late Sunday. Greenwood’s wounds are described as mainly to his side. Floyd Bay is in Morgan County jail charged with assault with intent to murder. The incident reportedly occurred on First Avenue near Patterson Gin Co.

Board of Revenue discusses finishing the Somerville to Decatur road and securing rights of way. The Somerville to Decatur route is to be rock quarry resurfaced by Christmas to provide a year round road extending toward Guntersville. The Tennessee Valley Authority announced a sale of electricity to Electro Metallurgical Co, a Union Carbide subsidiary, for a new plant near Wilson Dam Alabama. The deal defaults to 20 years with a 90 day $5000 cancellation option and could yield TVA over $750 000 annually if 40000 kilowatt hours are used by 1941.
Representative Lister Hill said Electro Metallurgical Co, a Union Carbide subsidiary, will locate a plant in the Wilson Dam area. TVA notified it would require kilowatt hours annually, with costs running into millions. He called it the start of the electro chemical industry in the Tennessee Valley, unlocking development comparable to Niagara Falls. Alabama has cheap power and minerals needed.
