Fire at the Standard Oil Indiana refinery near Whiting began before 6 a.m. and raged with high heat and exploding tanks. Chicago high pressure water units aided firefighters though many hoses burned. Evacuations occurred as fuel storage risks and new tanks remained a threat.

Cattle Show Plans for Morgan County Fair
Plans for the 1955 Morgan County Fair cattle exhibition are ready. Agriculture exhibits chair man Bud Bryan says the event will feature one of the county’s largest displays with top beef and dairy cattle. Dairy judging is Sept 14 and beef judging Sept 15 at 8 p.m. Judge C. T. Bailey of Athens will award first through third places. The Morgan County Cattlemen’s Association and county agent's office organize the shows.

LaBoon Named General Chairman of Decatur Merchants Division
George LaBoon was elected general chairman of the merchant division of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce. He will head a steering committee with equal merchants from both town sides and serve as an ex officio Chamber director. A 13 year old Valhermosa Springs boy died from a shotgun wound to the neck while playing with a friend at Wal Springs. Ramey Bond 13 son of Mr and Mrs M D Bond died. David Johnson 13 and Bob Sutton 14 were present when the 20 gauge shotgun discharged accidentally at the Johnson home. Bond died at the scene and the body was sent to Peck Funeral Home Harteselle. The incident occurred about 4 30 yesterday afternoon.

A 52 year old Jasper woman, Mrs Bessie Conner, died of a fractured skull after a 1950 Ford driven by Bervin Hayes left Center Hill Road, hit a culvert and rolled. A 15 year old passenger, Faye Colburn, was treated and released. Hayes is held in county jail for investigation.
