Free textbooks in Decatur schools face funding limits
Decatur educators describe state allocations as insufficient to supply free texts for all pupils. Since 1966 the state funds lag behind needs, forcing local committees to ration and recycle books, with inequities between Austin and Decatur High Schools. Officials foresee gradual move to paid texts if funding remains unstable.

Fort Mims massacre remembered on 160th anniversary
In Baldwin County Alabama the Fort Mims site prepares for a quiet Aug 30 observance of the 1813 massacre in which about 517 settlers died. Archaeologist Dr Read Stowe and students unearthed remains and mapped the fort ruins with a $12 000 Alabama Historical Commission grant. The site may later house a museum and possible reenactment. Mobile Mayor Lambert Mims and Dr Thomas Weatherford III are noted descendants.
