Dow Sags as Prime Rate Hikes and Food Costs Rise
New York stocks drifted lower as prime lending rates climbed to 9 percent and food commodity prices rose. The Dow Jones fell to 868.90 at noon with more decliners than advancers on the NYSE, while the broad NYSE index slipped to 54.35 and the American Exchange showed mixed moves. Travelodge led gains on a takeover bid, JP Morgan advanced, and ITT slipped amid Watergate related disclosures and a stockholder suit clouding its outlook.
