Young parishioners of Memorial Drive Methodist Church serve ice cream and cake at 7 PM in Greenwood Park to raise funds for the church building. Also notes weather outlook, casualty lists, and local notices including hospital admissions and births across Decatur area.
Leroy Luckett, 26, a Negro, was arrested by Morgan county deputies on an assault with intent to murder warrant for allegedly attacking Ruby Walker with a knife. The warrant, sworn before County Judge W. H. Long, led to Luckett’s arrest by Officers W. H. Kirkpatrick and Garland Nuby. He posted a $750 bond. A second arrest by county officers involved a public drunkenness charge.
In Birmingham Alabama a five week strike involving 1200 workers at the Pullman Standard Car Manufacturing Co Bessemer plant ended as the agreement was reached with the company and ratified by local members shortly before noon.
A CIO ore miners strike was settled today as 4000 miners returned to work and 17000 idled at two steel mills. The agreement, announced by R. E. Farr, followed a long conference between steelworker leaders and local union officials, with the walkout spreading from Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co. to adjacent coal mines.
Washington Aug 18 Justice Department announced the arrest of Morton Sobell a 33 year old New York electrical engineer on charges of giving national defense secrets to Russia. He was taken in custody at Laredo Texas after fleeing the United States in June. Sobell worked on restricted Navy duties at General Electric Schenectady from 1942 to 1947 and is charged in an espionage conspiracy that could carry the death penalty.
Florida was given the all clear signal on the Atlantic hurricane today after a morning forecast. Chief forecaster Grady Norton said barring any unexpected development the storm will swing clear of Florida and possibly onto Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. A Navy hurricane hunter observed the eye at latitude 28 75 West, reporting rough conditions and plans to rest in the eye. Winds near the center reached 140 mph with gusts outward to 100 miles. Gales spanned a 350 mile diameter as the storm moved northwest toward the Bahamas and Florida before turning northward. See FLORIDA on Page 2.
North Korean sixth division infiltrated through American lines near Hamnan, attacking from dawn through fog. U S 25th Division units fought bloody hand to hand, then counter attacked driving them from three peaks. 18 year old prisoners, Russian officer presence, and shells lit the village as Lt. Frank Lamothe of New Orleans blasted a village with mortars and air strikes.
W R Smith, blind for 28 years after an optic nerve strain in railroad shops, gains partial sight at Vanderbilt hospital. Doctors say cataracts blocked vision. an operation offered a 98 percent success chance. He will wear glasses next week and hopes to return to the ring by Labor Day.
Charles W. Taylor a 44 year old tenant farmer died yesterday after a ladder accident at Pitts motel He fell while replacing a flood light skull fracture may have been caused by touching a live wire Witness Jack Pitts said Taylor toppled backward from a ladder and died en route to Decatur General Hospital Funeral services are set for Sunday at Greenbrier Baptist Church conducted by Rev E E Matthews Interment in Madison Cemetery Taylor left a wife three daughters two sons two sisters a brother and his father Marion Taylor of Russellville The body will lie in Browns chapel until services He was employed by Pitts on his Madison farm near Mooreville Madison County records.
At Lake Success the United States urged a Korea settlement that leads to a unified independent state. Warren Austin outlined U N aims while Malik accused Washington of widening the war. The session featured sharp exchanges over postwar Korea and Soviet influence. See U N on Page 2.
Forty-three Morgan county boys left for Gadsden yesterday to undergo pre induction physicals. Officials are seeking two missing youths, John Albert Wilkerson and Haywood Coleman Nix, with the Selective Service office contactable at 3173. Wilkerson’s last address was 717 McCartney Street.
President Truman reportedly will not personally appear in congressional campaigns beyond possibly Missouri. He told reporters he has canceled speaking engagements and remains busy at the White House, signaling no campaign activity for now. Some aides say it would not be policy to campaign publicly at this time though his home state may see a talk if needed.
State and federal officers arrested six people in two days on distilling charges. A 1,500 gallon tank still was destroyed in Lawrence county, with three men captured. Two suspects, J. Terry and Walter Lang, were jailed in Colbert county. one juvenile was released. Arraigned: Luther Boyd Thomas Lee Clifton Sheppard, all of Moulton, on federal warrants. Boyd freed on 300 bond. others jailed. Bond set at 300 for Tommie Yielding. Officers included ATU and ABC agents, and local police.
The United States accepted Turkey's offer to send a combat force of 4500 men to Korea. The State Department said the gesture is deeply gratifying and marks the third formal acceptance after Thailand and the Philippines.
Washington reports that a Pearl Harbor style air strike could reach many U S targets today. Radar and fighters likely would miss several bombers, with only a minority knocked down before crossing borders. Air Force strategists emphasize destroying launch bases and key industrial centers to halt attacks.
Allied troops, tanks, artillery and air bombs halted two Red Korean thrusts near Taegu, sending refugees from the city. US Marines and American and South Korean infantry struck hard at Changnyong, forcing Reds to retreat across the Naktong. Gen. Church praised the Marine assault as delivering a “hell of a licking.”
Senate democratic leaders refuse to let Republicans decide which anticommunist bill to bring up. Senator Myers of Pennsylvania says the democrats will make the call and Republicans will not dictate. The early action plan targets anti communism legislation as the chamber presses ahead.

Denbos Wellden Auction Co of Athens sold the R. W. Letson property on Sherman Street to B and Dave Denbo of Decatur for 8500 dollars. Oakley Greenhaw, salesman and auctioneer, said the cafe and service station on Sherman Street were included. The sale occurred at public auction.
