Shanghai night erupts in fire and gunfire as Chinese and Japanese forces clash around the Whangpoo river area near the international settlement. Reports say large fires may have started inside Japanese lines while Chinese forces press along northeastern fronts.
A group of 42 Muscle Shoals residents telegrammed Senator Bankhead urging Congress to pass a resolution mandating TVA headquarters relocate from Knoxville to near Muscle Shoals. They cite the TVA act requiring headquarters in the immediate Muscle Shoals area and expect Alabama lawmakers to push the move before adjournment.
Decatur reports a per person debt load of 84.28 dollars for residents, outlining the city’s overall indebtedness and fiscal posture based on available records.
In Fairbanks Alaska a joint Russian American and Canadian air search for six missing Russian trans polar fliers was halted by thick weather. Jimmy Mattern, famed American aviator connected to the Siberian rescue by Sigismund Levaneffsky, was among those grounded.
County and federal officers conducted a raid in the eastern county area taking two men into custody an apparently white man and a negro. Each found stills had about seven hundred gallons capacity. The raid marked the eight year old David Mason Sandlin son of Sheriff J Street Sandlin assisting as a rookie. One suspect attempted a rapid escape leading officers on a two mile chase before capture. Both arrestees were turned over to Federal authorities and jailed in Huntsville Alabama. The raiding party included Sheriff J Street Sandlin Deputies Kilgore and Blalock and Federal officers.
Aboard the President McKinley near Shanghai, Japanese bombers and a destroyer shadowed the vessel as it anchored at the Yangtze mouth. Refugees aboard the Lincoln line tender to the Jeffer son headed to safety, while Chinese and Japanese forces loom in Whangpoo Harbor.
Athens Alabama reports a rising county road and bridge fund from gasoline taxes. June receipts show $8,281.06 from the state tax and $1,274.48 from the county tax, totaling $9,555.54 as the monthly share. The total has grown in recent months.
Six defendants appeared in the city police court today. Four faced drunkenness charges, one faced petty larceny, and one faced disorderly conduct.

Entries include Clarence Schuff catching a blue heron on his line, L A Gagnier hooking a wildcat with liver bait, and Bob Judd’s 3 pound black bass tale on the Fox River. In Covington Tennessee a 35 year old Black man accused of slaying Marshal Chester Doyle was found shot and hanged beneath a bridge outside the city. A mob reportedly abducted him as he was being transported from the county jail after Doyle's death and he was later found with rope around his neck and head in a drainage ditch. Sheriff Vaughan said six masked men forced him from the road and no arrests were made.
Berea Ky August 17 Fear runs high after the death of Opal Sturgell a 16 year old Berea College sophomore on campus Sunday night Police Chief Earl Hays said he moved to prevent violence by seeking George E Wells a 20 year old Berea senior on a murder warrant. Wells from Auxier Floyd County was a former suitor of the slain girl.
P O Davis says Alabama farm income for 1937 is estimated at 209.6 million, up from 158.3 million in 1936, boosted by federal farm programs and newer practices. He notes the increase since 1932 and calls for unity in the state’s growth amid growing pains. County Agent J L Liles led the meeting.

Aldridge died at his Trinity area home at age 97 9 30 PM The Meho dist church near Trinity will host services at 3 PM Wednesday with Rev J S Robertson Inurnment follows at Brown funeral home He is survived by his widow five sons a nephew and several pallbearers His death brings sorrow to Morgan and Limestone counties where he was well known
State highway patrolmen, about 50 strong, head to Wheeler Dam this afternoon for a fish fry. Captain Van Gilbert leads the caravan to the eating grounds where 60 pounds of dressed fish are ready. Patrols at Decatur and Tusculum will stay on duty for emergencies.
Premiums in cash were paid to raise the price of the first bale sold in the area. The initial bale weighed 540 pounds and was ginned in Courtland, with buyers and Chamber of Commerce backing the effort. A second 540 pound bale from Loneville five was delivered to Farmers Gin this morning, awaiting sale.
Six students at the Alabama Business Institute received bronze pins for shorthand progress in the Gregg shorthand program. Pins were presented to Ethel Toles Frances Peer Pauline Young Mary Jo Gordon Lula Mae Boggs and Ozell Taylor.
Morgan County Health Department reported no new typhoid cases in Decatur or the county today. No additional information on a suspected city case has been released.
Athens Alabama August 17 five county high schools will reopen August 23 announced Amos C Clanton county superintendent of education. Schools include Elkmont Ardmore West Limestone Clements with three junior highs Fast Limestone Belle Mina Mooresville and Piney Chapel opening the same day.
Morgan county sheriff announces a crackdown after a weekend of twelve raids in Decatur Hartselle and rural areas. State stamped liquor and wines were seized twelve men charged with prohibition violations jailed six bonded and six remanded. Sheriff Sandlin vows to make Morgan county drier than ever and continue a county wide crack down.
Senator Copeland denounces the Black Supreme Court nomination as a Klan sympathizer in a lengthy senate speech. Senator Burke joins with caution about confirming a senator and questions Black's impartiality while McGill defends Black and denounces prejudice. Black is absent. debate draws galleries as the nomination proceeds.
The Tennessee River gauge reads 16.6 feet at seven this morning with no rainfall. The prior 24 hours saw a high of 98 and a low of 73.
