Morgan County residents celebrate relief as heavy rain totals reach 1.29 inches ending an intense heat drought. Officials note uneven distribution across the county with some areas receiving only traces, but general rainfall brings hope for an early fall after months of record high temperatures.
The Daily reports Bob Bell says Miller leads Alabama governor race by about 7 000 votes with no doubt of nomination. Early returns show Judge B M Miller ahead of W C Davis by over 4 000 in gubernatorial contest as 67 counties report. Other statewide races show Keeley leading lieutenant governor and Steagall trailing in Congress with varied county totals.
Edward B. Almon of Tusumbia appears set to win Congress by a statewide unofficial margin between 2,500 and 3,000 votes over Andrew G. Patterson of Decatur. Early returns show Almon leading in Colbert and Jackson counties, while Patterson carries Limestone and Morgan. Final official totals awaited after seven counties report.
Kiwanis members plan the district convention in Huntsville September 8 and 9 with Huntsville preparing a major entertainment program. Governor Dave Edington of Mobile announced the meeting as Decatur and Cullman clubs compete for attendance.
Rescue squads worked to reach forty six miners trapped after an explosion at Blakeburn coal mine near Princeton British Columbia. Two killed and one survivor found as a tunnel cave in blocked passage and marsh gas was suspected as the cause. About two hundred workers are on site.
The circuit court unofficial returns show Draper taking the lead in a tight race for the revenue board. Large city boxes later gave Draper a decisive majority, making him the likely general election nominee to succeed incumbent Frank J. Davis.
Marvin Kelly of Hartselle seems the state senate winner over Melvin Hutson by a slim margin as court house tabulation proceeds. With four boxes missing in Morgan Hutson may lead, while Kelly’s 376 vote margin in Lawrence could offset that. Troup leads Maxwell for tax assessor. Patterson wins one legislative seat with Tidwell likely to take the other over Burleson.
Three men were slain in a gangland clash near Wildwood Minnesota with police linking the killings to a fight over slot machine concessions. Frank Coleman of Kansas City and Sammy Stein of Minneapolis died, a third man was later found. A fourth body was not confirmed.
County by county counts in the eighth district race show Patterson with 12 953 and Almon leading Patterson by 2 474 in the latest complete figures, with several boxes reported as incomplete.
In St. Louis on August 14, radio enthusiasts heard the voice of Dale Jackson aboard the endurance mono plane Greater St. Louis. He and Forest O Brine set a new world record for sustained flight this morning and spoke of transmitter improvements while joking about the uncertain duration of their flight.
H. M. Bailey of Somerville route three has shown more interest in the race for commissioner of agriculture than any man in the county. Bailey has stayed with The Daily in watching returns on this race.
Although busy in Birmingham, Judge Thomas W. Wert remains interested in his home county. He phoned several times to check on how the various races were progressing.
John C. White president of the Decatur Kiwanis club for the second time failed to preside today due to his annual vacation. The article notes tables listing legislative and gubernatorial races for Morgan county will appear on page nine of today's issue.
Athens pastor Rev. Dave Atmore died recently and was buried at his former home in New Market after a long residence in Tanner. He served the Athens area for many years as a local clergyman.
Large turnout at the Decatur Kiwanis club meeting signals vacation season winding down and members resuming duties.
Milton Rodgers, 22, told Wake County officers that three unidentified Negroes abducted his female companion, Viola Edwards of Elizabethton, while she rode with him near Raleigh. A car followed, forced a stop, and the assailants seized the woman after firing a pistol. No suspects are in custody.
Political observers note Judge B M Miller achieved a landmark victory in Morgan county. With four rural boxes in, his combined total likely tops all opponents and could exceed 1200, possibly setting a new record for gubernatorial candidates in the county. Miller carried twelve of thirteen boxes in Decatur.
Paul Montgomery a 25 year old local aviator confessed to being hired by two or three men to pilot a bombing raid on Providence Kentucky coal field. He said bombs were prepared at a local airport and one accomplice rode with him on the flight. No homes or mines were struck and he returned the passenger to the field. Authorities expect further arrests.
New York reports bishop Charles Marzena of the Checho Slova Orthodox Catholic church was found guilty by a jury of diverting sacramental wine to bootleg channels. Co-defendants Victor Dumbra Saul Grifler Daniel Cella Michael Ricucci Robert Maggi and John Antonelli also convicted. Judge Thomas deferred sentence until tomorrow. The maximum penalty is two to five years imprisonment with a possible $5000 fine.
Morgan county voters cast 6,120 ballots for congressional races but only 3,699 in the U S Senate contest between Bankhead and Thompson. Observers note many did not vote in state races, while Independents see gains for Heflin and Judge Locke as potential November opponents.
Officials forecast the Morgan county election tally would not be completed by Thursday afternoon. The count started at the courthouse soon after noon, with the demissmtic executive committee overseeing the process.
Andrew G. Patterson of Decatur defeated congress candidate in the eighth Alabama district and Edward B. Almon of Tuscaloosa, successful candidate, announce joint support for the Democratic ticket in November. Patterson wired Judge Almon with congratulations and full backing, while Almon replied they will work together for a great Alabama democracy victory.
