President Ford told his economic advisers that taming inflation would be the high and first priority of his administration. The initial meeting, two hours after his inauguration, was described as a very preliminary discussion of the nation’s economic problems.
Leaders from 59 nations gathered at the White House as Gerald Ford was sworn in, with Kissinger pledging policy continuity. Reactions spanned praise for American resilience and concern over Nixon’s legacy, while Thieu warned of possible Communist offensives in Vietnam and China urged silent note.
Betty Ford rose early to tea, joined by her children Susan Steven Michael and Jack as Gerald Ford took the oath and became 38th president. The Fords left Virginia for the White House, witnessed Nixon farewell, and prepared for a move to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue as movers packed the Nixons’ belongings.
In Washington Nixon aides disclosed 17 minutes are missing from a subpoenaed Watergate tape raising a possible legal claim. Police report a city youth was killed by a small calibre rifle fired in the back of the head around 8 p.m. Hagood sat in a chair when the shot rang out. Coroner Guy Hollaway investigated the death late Friday night with no immediate ruling.
