Editorial supports handgun ban as national crime policy
A federal commission urged states to prohibit handgun ownership citing home violence and higher homicide risk with handguns. The piece argues the ban would reduce murders, though not fully eliminate crime, and maintains rights to bear arms would be preserved. It notes rifles and shotguns face no similar call and urges serious state consideration.

Bridge Change None Too Soon
ANOTHER STEP has been taken toward providing a safer rail bridge facility across the Tennessee River here with Southern Railway's request to the Coast Guard for approval of improvements to the structure. Money for planning the improvements has been included in the budget of the Tennessee Valley Authority and construction funds will come later. The TVA will pay for most of the costs because most of the threat surrounding the existing structure is to river traffic. The less chance for such traffic striking the swing span machinery of the bridge means the less chance of a serious accident involving a transported poisonous substance that could be released on the city from a ruptured tank. By mid-1976, when the improvements are to be completed, we should have one of the safest such structures along the river, and it will be none too soon.
