Educators To Work Out Funding Plan In Alabama
A five member Senate subcommittee urged educators to devise a compromise to trim about 4 million from a 1.15 billion education appropriation. Budget officials raised revenue forecasts, and the panel sought a report after talks with state school Supt. Leroy Brown and Alabama Education Association leaders. House actions included highway weight increases and a 214 million highway budget, with bond issues totaling 207 million for schools and colleges. The education bill remains atop the Senate calendar as leaders promise fiscal restraint.

Alabama sheriffs would retire after 16 years with a pension under a bill passed by the House. Sen. Billy Melton told the Senate Judiciary Committee that current law allows suits for injury but not wrongful death from breach of warranty and proposed adding death.
