President Eisenhower indicated plans to appoint Neil McElroy of Procter & Gamble as secretary of defense after routine security checks. McElroy held talks with Eisenhower and Wilson during a three day visit, while Wilson hinted at leaving cabinet duties before the new fiscal year budget cycle begins.
The Decatur city council approved payments totaling 8 000 to John G. McBride, wife, and Mrs. Catharine Milligan for property along Sixth Ave and a land triangle in exchange for rights of way. The state dock project and a TVA deed were noted, with overall city costs of 420 in engineering fees.

Temperatures run 2 to 5 degrees above normal in the extreme northwest to 2.3 degrees below in the southeast. Normal minima 67 to 77 and maxima 87 to 96. Northwest area seen slow rise through Friday with little change elsewhere. Precipitation moderate to locally heavy in the south and light or none in the north, with scattered showers mainly in the north this weekend.
President Eisenhower asked Congress for 500000 dollars to enable the Public Health Service to prepare for an Asiatic flu outbreak and authority to transfer about two million dollars of Public Health Service funds for use against an epidemic. Surgeon General Leroy E. Burney warned of a definite probability of a large U S outbreak this fall or winter, but didn't expect a high death rate.

The case references aims to obtain data on U S arms atomic energy and troop dispositions.
Two Texans Cecil Turner and William Hable denied shooting Alabama Sheriff J Cuthbert Woodham while admitting they robbed a Hartford hospital. They waived extradition from Florida and were returned to Geneva Alabama to face assault with intent to murder charges.
Oliver Hardy, the famed half of the Laurel and Hardy duo, died at his mother-in-law Mrs Monnie L Jones home in North Hollywood California. He suffered a paralytic stroke on September 12 and had been incapacitated since and unable to speak after the stroke.
Mrs. Troy Martin narrates Casey an ocelot found in Panama City as a three month old pet. The animal roams the home while chewing shoes and quietly sleeping on desk in the Credit Bureau office. Casey weighs 40 to 60 pounds when grown and expects further tempering with age.
