Alabama to send 116 delegates to repeal convention in Montgomery on August 8 after repeal wins in 42 of 67 counties. Official tally shows 100,269 for repeal to 71,631 against. The Navy Department awarded contracts to the lowest responsible bidders for 22 new naval vessels and allotted 15 more to be built in navy yards. Bids opened July 26. officials said allegations of collusion by Senator Trammell’s committee chair were not substantiated. The department will maintain a five day workweek for civilian staff at shore stations.
An Associated Press report from Montgomery says Attorney General Thomas E. Knight Jr. is en route to Athens to confer with Judge James E. Horton about new trials for the Scottsboro defendants. Horton told The Daily he does not know which phases Knight wishes to discuss and had not yet learned of any set dates for new trials.
Northwest winds at 12 miles an hour ended a five day East heat wave that killed over 100 people and left many prostrated. New York City reported 29 deaths on the day, totaling 56 for the period, Philadelphia recorded 21, with others scattered across the region.
John Peach, legal advisor to Gov. B. M. Miller and prominent Shef field attorney, has decided not to run for Congress. He stated he would not enter the race if Carmichael ran and, upon Carmichael’s formal entrance, confirmed he would not be a candidate.
The six cent gasoline tax yielded $715,177 in June split evenly between state and counties after collection costs. The gain over May was $15,783. Daily gasoline sales averaged 307,321 gallons.
A joint Decatur gathering of food distributors at Hotel Lyons set an open 7 am to 5 pm wholesale schedule weekdays 7 am to 4 pm Saturdays for wholesalers. Retail merchants joined a later adjournment after discussing the National Recovery Administration code with about 90 percent attendance.
Delinquent taxpayers in Montgomery county receive 60 days grace before sale. Tax Collector Robert C. Phelps Probate Judge Grover C Hall and a real estate exchange committee raised 450 dollars to fund a bond and an extra clerk to separate delinquent accounts for the 60 day period.
Albany reports threats to kidnap Ed ward O Connell s wife as guards patrol the mountain camp 20 miles from the city where young O Connell was returned after a 24 day captivity. No arrests yet in the O Connell kidnapping and related cases across several states.
A canning demonstration by Mrs J T Nelson will be held Friday afternoon at the community house starting at 2 o'clock. The public is invited to attend and no cans or articles are required for participation.
The bi monthly council meeting is set for Thursday night at Decatur City Hall. Officials expect only routine matters with no outstanding business on the agenda.
Tax Collector Madges Crow announced a 300 day delay in mailing citations for a decree of sale to delinquent county taxpayers. Notices were moved from August 1 to after September 1 to align with farmers completing acreage reduction and government check payments, with sale postponed to October to reduce the delinquent list as funds disperse. About 140000 dollars in government payments are due to landowners in the next two weeks, expected to spur debt repayment across the county.
Lightning struck the flag pole at the postoffice building shortly before noon on Wednesday hurling splinters across Bank street. The American flag tore loose from its moorings and fluttered to the ground as the flag staff and pole suffered heavy damage.
Burglars entered the William Sockwell residence near Belle Mina, Limestone county, while the family attended church. They ransacked the home, took clothing worth hundreds, and fled on foot. bloodhounds tracked to a Decatur area, with officers continuing investigations in Limestone and Morgan counties.
Farm home demonstration clubs in this county plan an annual encampment August 8 9 and 10 at Shoal Creek west of Athens. No men will be allowed at the camp with women in supreme command. Mrs Marion Spidie county home demonstration agent will supervise the event.
The Woman's Christian Temperance Union will hold a Friday afternoon meeting at 3 o'clock led by Mrs. R. E. street. All members are urged to attend this session.
J E Addicks manager of the bureau of foreign and domestic commerce arrives in Decatur with Birmingham business leaders to discuss NRA codes at a 7 30 PM courthouse meeting sponsored by the Decatur Chamber of Commerce. He will answer questions from 4 000 Alabama audiences and 1 008 inquiries about tonight’s event.
The recovery program is opened to large employers and labor under contract without changing wage and hour terms. Hugh Johnson and Donald Richberg issued interpretations of Roosevelt’s voluntary agreement detailing hours weekly employment may be maintained without impairment. Employers seeking the Blue Eagle must conform in other ways to the wage standards.
Miss Matilda Stewart, 38, was found dead in a Morrilton farm well. Arkansas authorities held Rev. John L. Tucker as investigators pursue a possible homicide or accidental death. A coroner's jury cited reasonable doubt and ordered Tucker held for grand jury. Stewart, once a hosiery mill worker and housekeeper in the Tucker home, leaves two brothers and five sisters.
Morriston Arkansas August 3 coroner ordered the Rev John L Tucker 50 held for grand jury action in the death of Matilda Stewart 38 whose body was found in a farm well Tucker a rural minister denies involvement stating she threatened to kill herself he is jailed in Conway county Tucker is father of 10 living with her at Decatur Illinois and described as second cousin to Stewart who lived in the same house as his housekeeper
