Washington August 2 The house plans to delay debate on the senate approved wage and hour bill until next week. The labor committee aims to report a broader draft by Wednesday and consider further. The panel also weighs sugar production control legislation for Thursday.
Tonight at 7 30 the La Fiesta Club will elect officers for the coming year. All members are urged to attend the meeting at Valley Country Club to decide leadership and duties.
In Montgomery on August 2 Governor Bibb Graves dismissed a letter from J F Duggar Jr of Hope Hull Alabama asking for impeachment of Attorney General Albert A Carmichael. Graves said the letter suggested nothing the office could act on and noted Duggar claimed the Scottsboro four were released as part of a compromise.
July proved a banner month for the Decatur Ice & Coal Company packing plant with exceptional trade figures. Manager Harry Kloppfer says the operation had more hogs than a week ago but now has enough supply for full killing. Since January the plant redirected thousands of dollars to farmers in Lawrence Limestone Morgan counties, buying nearly all cattle hogs and lambs locally.
In Harlan Kentucky the NLRB opened hearings into Clover Fork Coal over claims that it used strip and tease performances to entice workers away from United Mine Workers meetings. Company officials denied the charges while prosecutors noted armed guards and criminal elements used to threaten workers.
Rev. I. W. Myers of Southside Baptist church will assist in a revival at Sardis Springs church in Limestone county. The revival runs through the week.
Alabama farmers attend Farmers Week as a teletype printer in WPA Hall taps AP news at 60 words a minute. The system, shared with Alabama Extension Service, feeds editors at 17 Alabama members and many other papers daily.
Relatives confirm the death of Robert Burr age 42 at his home in Sutter Creek California from a heart attack Sunday evening. He previously lived in Decatur Cractor Crecator era post service and worked in California in the insurance field. He leaves a wife and three sons Seneca Robert and Corey with survivors in Georgia. Funeral services will be held in Sutter Creek with interment there.
Police combed hoboles and checked six lenders records for clues to the identity of three suspects who shot and killed 29 year old Verne T. Hendrick and assaulted his companion Marie Fink 20 as she sat in his car near Pe Ka Kansas Friday night. Hendrick's widow and two young sons survive.
Chicago reports over 180 lives lost and hundreds injured in weekend highway crashes. New York and California tie for 16 fatalities, Ohio and Michigan each 15, Pennsylvania and Texas 12, Alabama 2, with totals across the nation.
Police seek a strong intruder after the C I T office safe weighing 200 to 400 pounds disappeared last night. Entry was gained via a transom, the safe rolled through the office to another room and down a rear stair to a waiting car. About $100 cash and papers were inside. witnesses described noises and a visit to a resident hallway door earlier.
Sunday drew overflow crowds at Bouthside Baptist Church for both morning and evening services. The day saw four additions to the church, and a baptismal service was held last night.
Governor Bibb Graves forbids state department appointees from soliciting business or contracts with the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. He sent letters to all heads of state departments stating the policy against such solicitations and detailing the administration’s stance.

Washington August 2 The wage and hour bill passed by the Senate would affect workers earning under 40 cents an hour or those working more than 40 hours weekly in interstate commerce sectors. Agricultural labor most railroad workers seamen and some executives would be exempt. no immediate wage increase would occur and a board would set standards only after advisory committee review and public hearings.
White House announced Attorney General Cummings said President Roosevelt could fill the current Supreme Court vacancy whether Congress was in session or in recess. Roosevelt had not yet decided when to appoint a successor to Justice Willis Van Devanter, who retired June 2. Early said the opinion, based on precedent and law, aimed to clear doubts about timing to comply with the law.
The senate judiciary committee urged a study of judicial reform during the upcoming recess. President Roosevelt indicated a supreme court vacancy could be filled anytime, while discussions grew on forming a special committee led by Chairman Ashurst to examine court organization, adding judges, and reform of procedure.
William Finchum was moved from the city jail to Morgan county jail after Friday night police arrest linked to a loitering report in Ferry Vine streets. Bill Moore swore out a warrant as investigators probe Finchum's claim of innocence regarding porch loitering at Dr Garrold Nunngester’s home and window screen damage at FE Polhill’s residence. Police describe Finchum as wearing a white sweat shirt with a white cap found in his pocket.
Edgar Webb and John Ballas nearly suffered a serious accident Sunday when a high powered speedboat capsized near the railroad bridge on the Tennessee River. Webb surfaced quickly while Ballas, submerged twice, finally reached the boat and swam free after fighting water in his throat and lungs. Both men were unharmed.

Williams Evans a popular Alabama Hosiery Mill employee and athlete, was injured at a Saturday softball game against Florence’s Gardiner and Warring team. He overran second base, collided as a throw came in, and suffered a broken vertebrae. He is in Benevolent Society Hospital, not yet critical, likely to wear a cast for several weeks.
John W. Sandlin of Decatur reports the first open cotton of the year near the Alabama Hosiery Mills using Summer Hour Highbred, testing 15 to 16 inches? the crop shows early vigor with 400 acres under his supervision. He predicts ginning between August 18 and 25 and notes a need for rain through September 1.
Morgan county board of revenue will meet Tuesday at 10 AM at the court house with farm extension service representatives to discuss selecting a farm agent. Candidates with inside tracks include Andrew Barnett of Blount county F E Martin of Morgan county and B G Hall of Lauderdale county. A settlement this session was not indicated.

Four new divisional commanders and a new Formosa commander were named, most with extensive China experience. The moves imply preparation for North China deployment against the Chinese central government.
