In Birmingham, Ralph Wood shot his estranged wife Louise Wood in front of her mother's home after a quarrel amid their separation and divorce filing, then killed himself. Deputy Coroner verdicts cited murder and death by his own hand. Wood was a local tire store manager.
The R-100 anchored at Montreal St Hubert Airport after a near 79 hour sea voyage from Cardington England. Damage to a fin was minor and repaired in flight. The crew planned several Canadian flights in the next ten days before returning home.
Miss Tomye Fudge, secretary at the Tennessee Valley laboratory, worked on the July report noting a record breaking number of examinations conducted during the month.
Prof. 8. A. Edwards issued a final notice to census enumerators counting county school children urging immediate returns from their districts. With only five or six still unreconciled, county totals await these final reports before tabulation can proceed.

Arthur O Williams Jr 17 of East Providence Rhode Island was chosen by Thomas A Edison from among top students nationwide to receive the second annual Edison college scholarship. The winner was announced at Edison's home with advisory input from Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone. Arthur was noted for the best written exam responses at the Edison laboratory.
In Tiltonville Ohio twelve miners were injured when a keg of powder exploded in the Redbird mine of Warner Collieries near here. Elvin McLaughlin, 35, is in critical condition at Martin's Ferry hospital. Most others expected to recover. Pit boss Seth Williams said the blast happened about a mile from entrance eight during slate and stone clearing after a prior squeeze incident. Williams suspects a broken electric light wire ignited the keg.
Wolfram Hirth and Oscar Weller, Germany's trans Atlantic air adventurers, begin their first over water jump from Kirkwall toward Iceland. Weather is favorable as they aim for Greenland next, then Labrador before reaching North America.
Hartselle residents await the arrival of the Nobles of Zamora Temple of the Mystic Shrine in the afternoon of August 21. A special train bearing the Nobles is due to reach Hartselle at 2 45 p.m. en route to Decatur.
The Bethel Baptist church will start its annual revival on Sunday August 3 with two services daily at 11:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Rev Bunyan Smith of Nashville will preach each day.

The temperature was 92 degrees at 1 pm, measured by the government thermometer. It marked a 15 degree decrease from the week's peak of 107, providing relief after several days of extreme heat.
Pauline Presley who led physical education and playground programs in this county for two years has resigned and accepted a similar role in Etowah county. She will base her headquarters at Gadsden.
Officers still have no clues to identify robbers who broke into Pointer Harlow Wholesale Grocery on First Avenue Monday night. The store has faced multiple burglaries in recent months. A group of alleged thieves confessed to a burglary on one occasion.
Northington reported Alabama cotton growers pooled 151,551 bales this season, advancing about 1.5 million dollars beyond cash prices. He credited the federal farm board for enabling a 15.64 cent per pound middling advance and noted cooperation to form the American Cotton Cooperative Association and stabilization corporation to manage leftovers, likely saving members at least 300,000 dollars.
Rev R T Tyler presiding elder of the Decatur district will preach twice Sunday. In the morning he will fill the Cullman church pulpit with no conference. In the evening he will preach at Austinville and convene the quarterly conference after the service.

The Rev. W. R. Bland of Huntsville a noted state minister will lead a revival series at the Hartselle Church of God starting August 18 and continuing through the rest of the month.
Chief E. W. Jones announces fourteen fire alarms sounded in July with only one causing notable damage.
In Mobile Alabama seven indictments were returned by a special grand jury investigating the Dauphin Island bond issue election on June 3. Named defendants include Ernest L Horeig Henry B Pruitt James P Connor and Ernest Harvard. They face charges of vote solicitation illegal voting and miscounts with arraignments set for October term.
A Decatur community sing featured J. O. Jones and Mildred Falkville, with E. A. Beck leading a lesson and the Kelly sisters performing a piano duet. The Bonanza quartette and several locals performed, closing with a prayer by Prof. Woodruff and plans for future Thursday sessions at Westside Presbyterian Church.
As the primary nears the demand for absentee ballots grows at the Probate Judge office. Workers check polling lists and mail ballots to Morgan countians living outside the county. After next Thursday no ballots can be mailed and requests must be in by then.
Deputy Sheriff W. T. Willoughby spent the day at Cain's picnic grounds and reported no liquor or disorder despite a large crowd and political oratory.

Doran of the Treasury’s Bureau of Industrial Alcohol will also seek more staff to strengthen enforcement against large-scale violators. Woodcock says the move is not a despair cry and cites expected gains from tighter enforcement.
Detroit police hold Narjorie Mansell 21, WMBC radio entertainer, at the women's detention home for questioning in the Gerald Buckley murder case. She is linked to Pete Licavoli and was found driving his automobile, as raids net six gangsters and weapons. One suspect, Inge Livecchi, arraigned for murder.
Miss Mary McCall of the Asheville North Carolina child welfare department is visiting her uncle J W McCall and Mrs Mc Call. She has also visited relatives and friends in Hartselle Alabama and Columbia Tennessee.
Mrs. R. M. McGlathery sang solo with Mrs. H. O. Troup at the Decatur Kiwanis club meeting. The two entertaining visitors are frequent club performers and were well received at the noon hour event.
The Blue Lantern tea room on Second Avenue is closed by proprietor W. J. Garnett who will devote full time to Whiteside lunch room management.
